What to plant in my stream?

I rebuilt the stream leading to my pond and I’m thinking about having plants in it. One to help nutrient export but also to give it some natural look. Any recommendations on what plants might look good in here. Please ignore the algae it needs a cleaning .

Water Irises would be nice, but they could brows big thou.

You could use water irises, just replant each year and get rid of the the excess. or use melon swords, or spider lilies, or dwarf cattails. Gray Cat plants impatients in her stream.

Can water irises survive winter if they’re dropped to the bottom of the pond and brought up in spring? Or is that essentially going to be an annual purchase if I went that route? Seems like they might be a good route if I can get them to grow on the inside edges of the stream. Might fill in nicely.

Any opinion on Lilly pads flowing down the stream? Not sure it would work and/or look good.

Lilies do not like very much water movement so I would stay away from them.
Irises are hardy and can be left in the pond/stream over winter without being moved to deeper water. I would use a dwarf iris such as Black Gamecock irises because they are easier to manage. Louisiana Flag irises are much bigger and have much bigger root systems.

I have had accorus "Sweetflag",Liriope and Fiber Optic Grass. All but the Fiber Optic Grass stays green all winter.

I noticed you wanted a natural look so not sure if you are interested in Impatiens or SunPatiens in your stream. But here is the link on how I plant them every year in case you are interested.

Are these irises something I can lay in the water of the stream or are they supposed to be placed in the dirt along side the stream?

One other question. If/when I place irises in my stream do I need to put them in a pot of some sort or can I let place them between the rocks in the stream? Any concerns with doing that? Can roots from these plants damage liner?

How to plant
If you’re planting Iris laevigata or Iris pseudacorus into shallow water, use aquatic soil and baskets. This can help prevent the irises becoming too invasive, and the baskets certainly make it easier to lift and divide clumps compared to those planted in the mud at the base of a pond near the water's edge.

Hello everyone,
I'm new to this and find this thread very interesting! I'd like to try planting irises in my stream, but I'm wondering: do these plants require a lot of maintenance throughout the year?
For example, I've heard that some varieties can become invasive or need to be divided regularly. Is this true of water irises like Black Gamecock or Louisiana Flag? Also, is it necessary to protect them in winter if my creek is shallow, or are they really as hardy as some here say?

I have found Louisiana Iris to be very prolific but can be managed easily by division They like water You could place in containers
