      Koi laying on its side

      Hey guys,
I have a koi that is laying on its side, this went on for two weeks.
I then had an idea to prop it upright, I thought maybe it would recover in a
      normal upright position.
I've been hand feeding it for two weeks and it eats well, it seems to be strong and at times
it will swim away and stop on the bottom, sometimes it will stop upright
other times it will fall to one side.
Im assuming a swim bladder issue ??
Is there anything I can do ??
      Meds ??
FYI, I've yet to do spring cleaning however the water is crystal clear and test good.
      Thanks
      Gregg

      What is the water temperature?

When you say the water tests "good", what does that mean? What are the numbers for:
      Ammonia
      Nitrite
      pH
      KH

      Ammonia - 0.0
      Nitrite - 0.0
      Phosphate - 0.0
      pH - 8.0
I have no way of measuring KH
      Water temp *65
      This is my test kit

I am going to suggest you get the High Range pH Test as it is more sensitive than the wide range pH. The wide range pH is really not much good except to tell us which of the other two pH kits we need. And the KH is the one test that I relied on most, unless there was an issue, as a good high KH will provide a stable pH which is needed for both fish and filter bacteria, and if the filter bacteria are happy, the ammonia and nitrite are generally going to be zero.

I don't see any obvious wounds or infections, but you might try antibiotics in the event it is a swim bladder infection. I have never had one, and don't remember anyone successfully treating swim bladder issues. Propping the fish up with blocks won't help, and will most likely cause scratches that can become infected due to the rough texture.

I have the same problem with a very large Kohaku, which decided to leave the pond, took about 30 seconds to get him back in. He lies about on the bottom mainly on his side and appears dead, but get the net near him and he is off. Swims around but when stopped he just sinks tail first. So advice given by a specialist Lab in the UK. Isolate fish in hospital tank, I am using an IBC tank with the top cut off, aerate the water, add half an ounce of pure salt and increase temperature by 1 degree per day up to max of 25 degrees, if no better in a month euthanize. Bitter end if it doesn't work but he is worth a try.
