Sudden death of 26-yr old koi.

We have a 6000-gal pond with 11 large koi. They were all fine this morning, then a couple hours later, I found one floating belly-up. Absolutely no signs of what happened other than a small amount of blood from the left-side gills. All the other fish are fine.

Other than the blood, I'd have guessed maybe it ate a bee - we think we've lost fish before this way. With the blood though, I'm left wondering what happened. If it was a bird, I'd expect puncture marks on the top of the body, but other than not moving, it looked like it should have been swimming around perfectly healthy. No lumps, lifted scales, discolorations, nothing. A stroke or heart attack wouldn't leave blood, I don't think.

Any guesses? I'm not bothering with water chemistry since all the other fish are perfectly happy, active, and hungry.

Sorry to hear that you lost a Koi. Are you sure it's not other predator trying to get at it? Just wondering.

I would say that it was most likely a heart attack or stroke. I have seen fish go from normal to swimming very erratic to dead in a matter of seconds, and thought it was a stroke due to erratic swimming. My fish was not as old as yours when it occurred.

Thanks, Rich, that's what we're thinking as well. The other fish continue to act normally, further discounting water quality.

Sorry to hear about the loss.

Highly unlikely that it was a bee. I keep honey bees and occasionally a bee lands in the water and a koi samples it. Every time I've seen this they quickly spit it back out. The really wise koi already know about bees and ignore them completely.

I have had older fish seem fine and the next minute they would be dead.

So sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose pets that you have had for so many years.
