      Good morning folks :-)

Thank you for the warm welcome.
I'm still lurking and learning in the background, but very grateful for the tremendous amount of knowledge to be found here.

A bit about me and our setup, that being my Dad and I.
My name is Justin, 49 years old, living just outside of Cape Town South Africa.
We have a lined dam/pond on the property, roughly 150k litres.
My Dad put 8 Koi in roughly 7 years ago, but never really did anything in terms of managing the water, until I started getting involved.
The dam also a very large amount of Talaipia (oreochromis mossambicus) in it, which we removed when we drained and relined the dam about 8 months ago.

To date, we have tried to implement and apply what we know and have access to here, in terms of getting the water into a better shape.
I'll take a few pics shortly and post them for you to get an idea.

We are currently battling with the birds that are feasting on our baby Koi, that being the Cormorant and Giant Kingfisher
I have installed a bird net over a small section of the dam, along with a floating living island to offer them some protection, but the Cormorant is incredibly clever and still gets to them.

Filtration we have managed to get going as follows..
2 x Sand Koi filters my Dad purchased a few years back, running in parallel.
Water then flows to a 3k litre galvanized lined pond, where we are growing water hyacinth to help with the algae and general filtration.
The water then flows to 2 shallow concrete ponds where we will be putting in more plants to further aid filtration.

We don't have the most reliable power here, so everything we are trying to do needs to be done with that in mind.
I'm totally open to advise, it's a good day when you learn something new!

Thank you again, I'm looking forward to all that can be learnt.

      Kind regards
      Justin

That must be exciting, in all the wrong ways. Didn't I hear that Cape Town was also having some water problems not so long ago? Has that all been cleared now?

Looking forward to seeing pics of your setup.

      Hi Bill

We did indeed have a problem with fresh water a few years back, our reservoirs drying up a bit too much for comfort.
Fortunately, we have had good rain the last couple seasons so all is well, and folks have learnt to better manage their water consumption as a result.

      I'll post pics shortly :-)

      Kind regards
      Justin

While not quite a "new" member, I built my pond last summer primarily due to the information I gleaned from this website. Have a few koi mutts in there right now but will probably venture down the rabbit hole of show koi.

Pond still isn't 100% finished, but like all hobbies it probably won't be because I'll continually want to upgrade. But I think it's OK.
