      Where to buy easy-to-grow lillies?

Years ago, I bought a pond lily that came all packages with a special pot, soil, and fertilizer. The instructions were to just open the packaging, drop it in the pond, and it grew really well.

Imaginarium sells a similar product, I think from Petco, but I found the plant never grew last year. I later inspected the "coconut husk" that it was in and couldn't find any see within. Does anyone know a place to buy pond lily that are all set for putting in a pond?

I think your best bet may be to visit a local water garden. They should have lilies already potted and ready to plant in your pond.

      Thanks for the referral. Colby.
Actually, I think all lotuses are fairly easy to raise if you pay attention to their needs. Here are some of the basics.
      1) Make sure you have a healthy tuber with at least one growing tip.
      2) Use good soil that is free from mulch and soil supplements.
      3) Do not place plant deeper in the water than 6" to start with. Some varieties can be gradually lowered to as much as a foot deep.
      4) Use a container big enough for the plant to stretch its roots.
      5) Fertilize after plant stems start shooting up and fertilize every month during the growing season.
      6) Divide the plant every 2-3 years.

In our area I regularly see the big box stores get the potted water plants and abuse them. Plants not cold hardy bought too early and left outside in sometimes near 20 deg temps and outdoor greenhouse structures too hot and drying starts out. If you buy this route always open the package and physically check the plant. Often you'll find they are rotting or already rotted and dried out. Our local Lowes abuses temperature and wet sensitive plants all the time. Everyone puts up with it because there are no close quality garden centers.

Always better to buy actively growing plants from a wet garden center display or a reputable online source. Also better results not using the small pot they come in.

Sorry, I thought you were looking for easy to grow lotuses. Lilies are not much different as to ease of growth. Start with a lily that does well in your temperate zone. Some hardy lilies “burn” in really hot temps. Get a tuber that is healthy and has a plant started on it. Also, decide if you want a hardy variety or a tropical variety. They have different needs. Plant your tuner in a three gallon pot at least if it is a hardy variety and a tropical needs at least a one gallon pot. Place the pot with the plant from one to three feet beneath the surface. Put fertilizer in the pot but not touching the roots directly. Fertilize monthly. If you have a healthy tuner to start with, and plenty of sunshine and warmth, your plant should flourish. Let us know what your pond environment is and what you are looking for and maybe we can give you some specifics.
