      I believe he installed the Fernco on the pipe stub with the threaded connector attached, without the diffuser disk threaded on the connector.

      I assume he used a mini-ratchet and tightened the bottom clamps of the Fernco to the stub in the Drain. You would be only dealing with a straight pipe with threaded coupling pointed upward. The disk would then be spun down on the coupler.

      That would explain the question about the spacing of the disk over the drain. It would seem to be a mixture of careful measurements and trial & error to get the desired gap for water flow?? Am I missing something?

      I had a very similar thing happen with the same piece of c**p bottom drain. In my case, a part of the threaded male part at the bottom of the drain broke off. I moved all the koi out, drained the pond completely down and used polyurethane roofing sealant to secure the fernco fitting to the remaining stub. Then I also used the sealant to connect the fernco to the diffuser since I couldn't get a screwdriver in to tighten the bands securely. So far it's holding, but I think it's probably a temporary fix.
