Nitrate Level hack using Hanna Chlorine ULR meter and API Mater Test kit

Having so much fun with this Hanna Ultra Low Range meter. They so accurate.
You might just be able to use these to detect different shades of colour not only for nitrates but also for ammonia and nitrite!!
      How about PP ???

Very interesting ... I think I may try this as I am attempting to hold a specific nitrate reading in my planted tank (plus after my initial use of it, my Chlorine Colorimeter is just sitting around doing nothing to earn it’s keep).
I wonder if my numbers will be similar to yours? I am, however, using a Nutrifin Nitrate kit.

How did you come up with the concept of only adding .5 ml of the nitrate kit fluid?

Thanks for the comment Ci. It was you that introduced me to this meter. The company is very responsive and has very good support. So I am going to order more stuff.

I just chose .5 ml just randomly. Also to "zero" the meter you are required to put in 10ml of unreacted sample. So I thought the meter may not detect 9.5ml, and 9.5 + .5 = 10ml. Hope this makes sense.

      Sid.

Well, I tried adding .5 ml of fluid from my Nutrifin test which was reading between 5-10ppm of nitrate on their chart. I zeroed with 9.5 ml of distilled water first. The number on the colorimeter read zero after the timer was done ... so I kind of gave up.
However, I now suppose I could try zeroing with 10 ml, then dumping 5 ml out and filling up again with the test kit fluid. I understand now that the actual numbers mean nothing, we just want to establish a number that associates with a colour range on the chart, and then we can get accurate measures up and down from that point ... correct?
I’ll try that tomorrow when I do all my testing and WC.

      KoiRun,
Very nice. Great way of trying to quantify the colors. I am always asking my wife to help me =) As to your PP question, I have done this with my Iron Colorimeter. See the post below
      https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showt...e-(PP)-Thought

You have to make a known PPM stock solution to get your readings so you don't kill your fish, but that is pretty easy.

Oh, and by the way. You don't need to hold the button and wait for the timer on a test like this. That is to give the reagent time to react when doing the actual test the meter was intended for. When using like we are using here, you can just press and release and you will get an instant reading.
      Cheers
