      Mitchiesan Dream Pond

      Hello my KP family
So my current swimming pool is 16x32’
I am using the half end for my pond and the shallow end for filter pit
I will stacks blocks 8x8x16” up to 3 rolls and finish with top cap
The divider wall will be direct on the current pool floor
How do I enforce that wall ? To the maximum strength since I’m using 30x30’ 60 mil pond liner
This plan has changed to 4-4” BDs and I’m locked on the size since I have my own reasons
I’ll go detail eventually but this is the most important part before anything can be done
      TIA

This probably is not want you want to hear, but let me play Devil’s advocate for a moment:

You have — by all appearances — a very nice swimming pool, and you live in a part of the world where it makes sense to have a pool due to the warm weather. This pond proposal — if carried out — will likely make it difficult / expensive to ever convert that back to a swimming pool. That could be a factor if you ever decide to sell your house, or if your circumstances change and you ever want a pool again.

I would try to hard to consider a dedicated pond in a different location — thus sparing the use of the pool as a pond.

If you simply must use the pool (as a pond), then I would use the entire pool. I would opt for retro-fit bottom drains and no-nitch skimmers — such that everything can be plumbed up-and-over the edge......in this way, the pool will not be damaged and you can always convert it back to a pool if so desired.

I second the above. I would guess that only a very small fraction of home owners would prefer a pond to a pool--and even fewer would want a pond that has been half converted.

When I moved into a home in Utah I built a very nice (IMO) liner pond that still had a very appealing (again IMO) natural look. I left the pond operational when we moved (sans koi) and was surprised to find out that the new owners fully removed/tore down/filled in the pond within a few weeks.

As for adding the wall, you'll need to have a way to keep the divider wall from tipping over or from disconnecting from the bottom and sides once it is filled with water. You would need to do more than just put rebar in the wall.

If this was my pool I would keep the pool as is and added a Zakki Sieve. It may not look as neat as a gravity-fed system but it saves you a lot of works and you will have a bigger pond.

Are you going to drill down into the floor of the pond and the existing sides so that the new wall is affixed to the existing structure with more than just mortar?

I plan to form the divider wall up to ground level
Drill into the sides and bottom with rebars the pour
I will try to have a wider footing on the filter side since my pond floor has a slope which will help
Then I will to the 4 raise walls above the ground level as interlocking
Another protection is an additional wooden wall right behind the concrete wall and will be fasten
I’d see if this going to last 25 years until the liner

      Thank for your thoughts Sir
We are staying here for good
The boys use the pool in summer but I’d get them an intex for a few more years likely
In future I might just fill the whole thing if ever quitting this hobby

Why not go even bigger? Do you need that much room for filter? Anyway, can't give you much inputs but looking forward to seeing the build!

will you have horizontal reinforcement ever level of block?

Look at any MSE wall or Culvert and you will need to incorporate some sort of design towards that.

It seems your idea would work better if you considered your filter pit as a normal build with structural floor tied with rebar to all four new walls. Since your using a liner, no concern about a crack between the existing pool liner and the filter pit walls. The swimming pools I have been around were not thick enough to drill structural elements into and expect success. I would suggest you consider your new filter pit "floating" inside the existing pool walls and a concrete structural box that is reinforced within itself. It would be tempting to place the wall and slab rebar, drop in a void form that represents the interior walls of the pit, build a single outside form wall on the open end and pour concrete in the 8-12" void between the pool wall and the void form monolith with the new floor.

The flow through the skimmers is in competition with the bottom drains. Most skimmers require a minimum differential head in order to operate, which means needing enough flow through the RDF input pipes to produce the necessary head, or having to close the bottom drain valves slightly to induce it.

Separately, if those are aerated bottom drains, half the floating detritus will get pushed to the other end of the pond, trapping it in the two corners that don't have skimmers.

Wish you all the best on your new pond conversion, will be awesome. Just curious with a pond 4 times the size you have presently , what is your estimate for water costs associated with water changes for the new pond?
