      Injured / Cut Face

      Hi everyone,

My first winter / spring with the koi. I recently noticed a what appears to be a cut or loose skin on one of my Showa...water parameters are normal. Please see the pictures uploaded.

I'd like to know how to help him heal as soon as possible. At the moment he is eating normal.

A little of bit of background. I noticed a few koi were flashing last week (thought it was the water, but no...one of them was not eating and staying at the bottom) and I did not have access to a microscope. I researched here and found that it is okay to treat Proform-C with prazi, to rule out most problems...So far I have tried:

      - 5-10 minute Salt bath
      - Proform-C
      - Prazi

      Thank you,
      Kevin

First, it is normally requested the actual numbers for the ammonia, nitrite, pH, KH, temperature, not a statement that the water is normal. Normal doesn't tell us anything, and if the actual numbers indicate a need for some changes to the water, they are cheaper to fix than the cost of treating the fish.

From the picture, there doesn't appear to be any infection on the cut, so for now no treatment would be the best treatment. Good water quality is imperative for healing. You mentioned flashing and isolation, which would indicate a high probability of parasites, but could also indicate water quality issues. Your treatment with the Proform C and Prazi should take care of the parasites, but if the fish haven't responded, or don't soon, then your treatment protocol was not what was needed.

      Please furnish us the numbers.

      Hi there Rich,

Thank you for responding. It's good that you don't think it has an infection.

I just completed a water test. For some reason my API test kit only tests for 4 criteria. From what I can tell:

      pH is 7.5
      Ammonia is ~0ppm
      Nitrite is 0ppm
      Phosphate is ~2.0ppm

Water temperature has been around 55 to 58 F.

      Thank you,
      Kevin

As of today, they seem lethargic all of a sudden. Last night was my 3rd dose of Proform-C and second dose of prazi (I know, first dose should have been done together with 3rd Proform-C treatment). As far as I know prazi is relatively weak even at recommended amount...so I figured after 2 25% water changes and redose on the 3rd day would have been fine...

But yeah not sure why they seem lethargic today, and spat out food they grabbed. They reacted very well with first and second days, they ate, swam around and no flashing.

I would watch them for a few days and see if the behavior continues or improves before doing any other treatments. The treatments, even though mild are still stressful and the fish need time to destress.

Thank you Richard. Will do! They seem better this evening. I will check first thing in the morning.

I couldn't resist but do a large water change. They are back to normal right now. Swimming and eating and no more flashing! Thank you Richard.

Good to get feedback, and better to get feedback of positive results.
