      Koi sudden death?

      Hello friends:

Today I netted my koi for examination, and it seems to be a a big mistake. One koi, about 50 cm, bled a lot from its gills. So I quickly released it. But some minutes later it was dashing around pointlessly in the tank, and then floating at the water surface by its side. I guess that it is dying.

I read here on Koiphen that some friends had koi that died quickly after being netted. I wonder if they behaved similarly before they died, and how often it happens.

I have never had problem netting this koi, so I don´t know why it happened this time.

I haven't had specifically the same situation as yours, but many koi will bleed profusely from the gills when netted. I think it is a case of stress induced high blood pressure blowing a vein in the gills. I have had koi stroke out where mine would be going down the pond, and suddenly lose any sense of direction, crash into things and almost immediately, go belly up on the bottom. The netting may have stressed the koi into having extremely high blood pressure blowing out a vein and causing a stroke, but that is only a guess.

      Thanks Richard!

Luckily the koi survived. Had very bad sleep last night! :-)

It behaved just like your description: Losing sense of direction and swimming speed. In the beginning it swam fast and irregularly, and bumped into the tank wall here and there. Then, before I went to sleep, it was motionlessly floating around following the current, and the only thing moving was the gill plates.

But this morning it is swimming normally and looking for food. So I am lucky that it is not sudden death! Must be very high blood pressure, like human heart attack.

Really glad he made it! I have a Bekko that will stress out and his fins immediately go red when netted.

I had a very big Bekko, very difficult to catch and bled without fail.

Could it be in this case, the fish loses a lot of blood and passes out.

Floats around the pond semi conscious overnight, with no strength to right itself.

More blood is made up and it comes out of ICU,and eventually carries on regardless, not knowing it was at deaths door?
