      Change of Scene

It is the dead of winter, but there are still blooms to be had here in SW FL. Our temps have been cooler than normal but when I walked outback to check on the farm pond there was a waterlily blooming and I passed this guy on the way down to the pond. Granted he is a gopher tortoise and not a water turtle, but January doesn't seem to be the time to pick nits. < g >

I'll change it up a little more, but no lilies. These plants are suitable as marginal plants; many folks use Impatiens and Calla lilies around the pond....and Datura work as well. The Impatiens is commonly called Parrot Impatiens ( Impatiens niamniamensis ), the Calla is Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Hercules' and the Datura is a double Datura metel.

The Datura is indeed stunning, but boy oh boy is it a pest magnet! The aphids love it and it never went thru a bloom cycle without tomato horn worms eating every leaf...it is in the tomato family of solanaceae but I swear I have fewer problems with the worms on my tomatoes. < g > This is the tuber on another tropical Impatiens I. tuberosa, it is a pink flowering plant and the caudex can get huge! Sources list them as 'tropical', but I need to keep them in heavy shade to nurse them through the Florida summer.
