      Submerged vs Shower?

      Hi,

I'm wondering which would be a better biological filter system for ceramic ring, lava rock, and pumice media (all 3 are mixed together)? I know the shower is proven to be effective but it requires the right media or else it is easy for water to channel and just bypass the media. That got me thinking for those 3 types of media, I would think the submerged application would be better but what do you guys think?

      Thanks

I think you are still better off with a shower. The water will channel on all media, but as long as some water is getting to it, you're good. You will get more bio conversion as a shower with that media

Been ponding for a while, with lots of successes, and lots of failures.

More oxygen to the little ones with a shower.

The design of the shower trays can be improved to give the fill, better more even coverage.

Less individual maintenance with the water passing on through.

      Thanks for the reply!
I saw a youtube video of a UK Koi dealer testing out the oxygen in the water and the water that comes out of a bakki shower has lower oxygen concentration than the pond water do so I no longer consider "oxygenation" as a perk for it. I do think shower are superior in perks, but I'm just wondering if it would be that superior in bio load conversion.

If you look at all the commercial koi farm's holding pen in Japan, they run all their bio filtration with shower and flow through. I have both shower & MBBR and they can work to compliment each other as ckt 1 & 2. Both have advantage and draw back. Shower is very good/efficient at denitrification bio conversion, provide the water quality free of detritus. Shower media will get clogged up if this condition is not met. 4K gph shower is very loud, especially at night even with the return water submerged. We have power blackout here in CA, the shower containers get very hot during the summer w/o cooling water. Shower foot print is smaller compare to MBBR but you get 2-3 ft head pressure on the pump. There are other nuance difference between them, both can be DYI and easy to maintain. Invest in a cheap pressure washer, that is very handy.

It would do would it not?

The little ones have had their share of it.

A trickle of water has more interface with the atmosphere than a body of water with only a surface to interface with.

Maybe you could share the video.

I agree, the Shower is not providing more oxygen for the water, it is however providing more oxygen for the bio conversion.

Maybe it is the same clip, but here is a cool video of oxygen readings of a pond at various points.
Around the 10 minute mark he tests the oxygen content of the moving bed, which had a significantly lower oxygen level than the pond water. I theorize that even though the moving bed is being supplied air, it is not being absorbed fast enough for uptake for bio conversion.
