Just started digging , Need to figure out how to get water in and keep it there , Its about 5' deep 50ft across . out in the middle dug a test hole into the water table . 5 more ft deep . it filled up 1/2 way
Not a good sign! The water wants, and will, in most cases, go to the ground water level. It sounds like yours is about 7.5 ft deep. Very difficult to keep it above or below that level unless you have clay soil and by the look of yours, you don't.
You can find out by running a garden hose for 30 minutes and turn it off. If the soil is clay, water will remain for a long long time. If it doesn't you will need to go to a very difficult plan B or C!
Some clay but not much , if i have to i can bring it in clay . My brother who digs huge ponds in NY for a living is coming in for Xmas . There are ponds all over this neighborhood . The guy next door just did about 1 acre pond and he is using something called Dam-mit you sprinkle it down qnd it swells up . I'm not big on the clay because of clarity . a liner is not a problem if i have to . it might not have water till spring . I might do a shallow well to keep it full . I planning on a spillway skimmer of some type pumping a BB10500 I have ,to a bog grid with valve option to a moss rock waterfall . No rush its raining now so not much action till after the holidays. This opportunity just came up because the equip. was available cheap and I can use the dirt.
Update , My brother a pond builder from upstate NY - Visited ,He said my soil is silt and it does not percolate like sand and
it will hold water . Rain water has been collecting and rising maybe 2 ft deep . I am in no rush to fill , Because I want to add filter bog and waterfall before filling up. I planted rye grass to prevent errosion
Nice work, looking great. I wishes I had spaces like your to do that. But being in SoCal and in the city, it's out of the question. I have a small size backyard, and that pond might even look bigger than my grasses area. LOL!
