Fluorite vs Flouorite Red for Anoxic Filtration

      Hey you anoxic fans!

Would regular fluorite be as good as fluorite red, like Dr. Novak recomends? I see just regular flourite looks mostly red, and actually has a higher content of iron. I can get fluorite at a local FS, but the red would have to be ordered in, which isn't a huge deal....mostly just curious...

This winter is my planning stage for my new Koi pond biuld in early spring!!!!!

      Cheers,
      KTK

In this video Dr. Novak says yes, to use only the Fluorite RED. He doesn't explain why but said use just the RED.

when I made my baskets a few years ago it was laterite that was hard to find. I believe most of us at that time turned to Ironite. Ironite is at most of your home improvement stores. I had no problem finding it at our local Home Depot, but not sure about Canada. Good luck.

Thanks, CF. I've seen that vid, just kinda wondering why he doesn't recomend regular fluorite since it seems loaded with iron. But maybe it's other things besides that that are lower, or not as soluble.....I guess I better play it smart and just order the red....

It seems like ironite is another 'deadly banned' substance in my over protective, Canada! lol!!

How do ya like your anoxic system anyway?

Living in the United States does have its benefits when it comes to buying deadly, and cancer causing chemicals! (except California) ;- )

How do I like my anoxic system? I designed my upper pond to house a section dedicated to the baskets. The baskets were easy and inexpensive to make.
My pond continues to test none or very minut levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

Is it the baskets? Not sure but they will stay in my system!

Wow! Sounds awesome!! I'm pretty sure it's the baskets.....so your baskets are just set up in a pond basically? So they can be with the fish also? I'm thinking of doing this in my old pond at my mom's. And do you do water changes much?

      Thanks for your input!!!!

My upper pond is 900 gallons, and has no fish. I designed it that way to hold my aquatic baskets of lilies, my Anoxic baskets, and acts as a settling chamber before returning to the main pond. Koi tend to destroy plants and baskets looking for roots to eat so that is why the separation.

I think every anoxic basket filter system I have seen has been in a chamber outside the main pond. Designed for a controlled water flow past the baskets.

I do more water changes in the spring and early summer, and they are done when it comes time to clean out my sand and gravel filters.

I believe you can use either one. But Ironite 101 works equally as well, is easier to find at least in the USA, and less expensive. I am using it in 41 baskets right now. No plants. But use about 15 baskets with plants in my separate goldfish/lily pond.

Use good old Ironite in the center of the baskets surrounded by cheap cat litter (with no additives) from Walmart.

In their latest videos for baskets used in discus tanks, they are using Flourish Iron Aquarium Plant Supplement injected into the basket with a Flavor Injector (used to inject flavor into your turkey). They inject it after you assemble the basket. The clay keeps the iron in the basket. You can refresh your baskets without pulling them apart as well.

I assume that Flourish would be available in Canada. My guess is that Ironite is not available as it is sold to spread out over your lawn and run off into the environment.

I used Ironite, so I don't have direct experience using Flourish.
