Lost 18 juvenile kois over 2 days

      Hi everyone,

I have lost 18 kois over the past 2 days:
Had acclimatised them from indoor pet shop to outdoors using drip siphoning from fish tank.
      Water parameters 15Celsius, pH 6.4, ammonia 0.5ppm, nitrite 0ppm, nitrate 0ppm
They were eating and coming to the surface prior to them passing away.
One thing I've read about is zinc toxicity from galvanized steel. I have a 3 FT x 2ft steel sheet covering the tank from algae. I directs some rain water into the tank. Is that enough to affect fish? Another thing I can think of is some slug poison that may have leeched into the tank ?

As you have ammonia but no nitrite nor nitrate I guess your bio-filter is not working, and the fish are killed by ammonia.

Welcome to Koiphen but sorry about your losses.
Your pH is very low and may be due to diverting the rain runoff into the pond. Yes, the runoff could have effected the water
as it is very often acidic and can cause the pH to "crash".

I'd get an ammonia binder like Safe or Prime before trying to raise and stabilize the pH since doing that will make the
ammonia more toxic. Get a KH (calcium hardness) test kit to know how low it is now and add plain baking soda slowly to
raise the KH and pH and help stabilize it.
I'd stop diverting the rain water and slow or stop feeding until the parameters are corrected.

As you are unlikely going to be able to test for a toxicity issue, I would get 6 feeder goldfish for a couple of dollars and put them in a 5 gallon bucket of the same water with an airstone. If they die, you may have a toxicity problem. Highly unlikely goldfish would die from 0.5 ammonia.
Your ph was low. Unlikely that the pet store had a ph that low. The rapid change may be the cause.
Do you have other fish in the tank that survived? Are they existing or new fish?
I assume you dechlorinated the water.
