One of 10 koi born summer 2019

      Hello friends:

I wonder what you think about this little one´s development. It is my favorite of the 2019 batch. Poor thing bled a lot from gills when I took it out for photographing!

By the way, I wonder whether this variety has a name. Thanks!

A yellow-white pattern on a metallic koi would be harwaki. But this one is not metallic. If the yellow eventually turns orange, it would be a kohaku. But at well over a year old, if it still looks yellow, it will likely stay that color, in which case, I don't know what the variety would be.

The bleeding from the gills when netted is more common in females than males. But most females do not do that, and a very small number of males do that. So the bleeding from the gills when netted is just an indicator of female, but not a sure sign. I used to have a male that bled from the gills almost every time he was netted. The body shape is starting to look a bit female.

I too have a male that bleeds from the gills when netted. He looks very much like a female, but is definitely male (doitsu).
