      Long body desirable?

      Hello friends:

I have some small koi from 2019 spawn. Most of them are quite thick, not so slim. On the other hand, tosai from the Japanese breeders are mostly quite slim. So I wonder if the slim body is more desirable than the thick adult-looking body?

Post a few pictures of those young koi so we can discuss them and compare, thanks in advance.

Too many variables to discuss without seeing a side by side comparison. Obviously everybody wants a koi that looks like the show-winning GC. Which one has more potential to reach that desirable body shape that we're all after? A home-bred fish or those from Japanese breeders with quality genetics and traits in their bloodline? Tosai produced in large quantities are typically skinny before & during the selling process. But give them a summer season in a dedicated pond with proper feeding and they will quickly bulk up over the summer.

Here's a good example of what can happen in just 6 short months (these are my personal fish). The first pictures were taken on the day I purchased the fish.

Here below are typical body types of the fry I have:

Please observe that I am not talking about the other qualities of good koi, but the body confirmation.

My personal opinion is that the orange one has the better confirmation.

You're correct about the kohaku with the larger pattern I doubt the body on the other two will improve, keep trying with different parents to see if you can get better results nice job on growing them out. And yes the longer slender build is what's desired for showing in the future in the event you wish to try your hand at it. There are plenty of show koi pictures here to help you with larger koi the two that jcardona posted are a good example. I do have to add the other kohaku is a kanoko kohaku it might turn into something interesting.
