G'day koiphrends - Last of the three pond pulls Tomorrow

      Hi, Everyone!
Tomorrow in the a.m. we will be pulling the Learning Curve Pond. For many, this is the most fun of all because you never know what you will find there.
It is home to some of the original Japanese koi including Longfins when I was getting one of everything. There are ki shusui who only made the third cut and you will see the difference in size even tho these koi are all from the same parent group. We may even find some that grew into their bloodlines and are now the real thing.

Also we will find youngsters from this year's flock spawn. and some 10-12 year old monsters! They will not win any prizes but there is something so winning about large koi and we will see a few. And I have a ki asagi in this pond named Thellonia and I adore her so much. Would love your thoughts on her.
Of course a little "light" rain is in the forecast, but not for the whole day.
      Pictures, tomorrow --Wednesday Oct. 20.

Pics of the Learning Curve Pond harvest 10-20-20 Part 1

Helloooooo from the pets in the Learning Curve Pond.
Typically, they did not enjoy this experience at all, but the rest of us had a fun time and it did not rain!

Here are some pictures of the largest fish, both candids and tub shots, with more to follow.

More sideways pics, guys, sorry. ;(

But one fine thing happened today. We think of the 16 finalists in the oyagoi comp who have been returned to the Lower Pond for now -- Probably 14 of them are female. Why? Anyone know. Well, today, we pulled a few dozen ki shusui from the 2017 spawn, same parental grouping as the ones in the Big Pond and the Lower Pond. They were third cut, and for the most part, they hadn't gotten any better, except for the next to the last picture in this photo line-up. That third cut ki shusui looked pretty good and it's a HE.

So he went to the Lower Pond with his sibs and we'll check him out next May and see how the boys look.
Other cameras were on site and if good ones show up, I'll post them.
Meanwhile, it was a good day, roughly 150 fish were rehomed, 150 were returned. Thellonia looks very good to me, and I'm happy about those jumbo ogons and matusba who are always fun to see. And perhaps an oyagoi was discovered.

Thanks for joining us in the Learning Curve Pond.

Max I've said this before and am going to say it again, you have a piece of heaven on your property now that at first you only thought you only had two boys and were blessed with a third one just sit back and think about this for a second; your hard work has produced a group of Ki Shusui Oyagoi that probably hasn't been done in the last 40 to 50 years, lady in my eyes you were at bat on the last inning and hit a home run with the bases loaded, my hat is off to you I got you right up there with the best, well done... I hope this opens a new chapter because I can't wait to read that book...

Nancy, Had it not been for my buds on koiphen, i would have bullheads and grass carp.
That's true! It was a good day when I found this forum and I thank you for hanging in all these years.

Professional photos from todays pull at the Learning Curve Pond :)

My new friend Mary Moeller has never shot fish before, but she's a wonderful photographer. Here are some of the same fish, and take another look at the ki shusui = a male and yay for him!

Great pics Max! So the ki asagi, Thelonia, is a cross between what? and what? Do you remember?

      Hi, Matt!
I remember speaking with you about this a couple years ago. I don't know how this fish came to be. But -- I've got asagi in that pond and I've got a scaled yellow ogon with no discernable metallic in her scales. That would seem like the most obvious cross. a number of years ago, i noted "pale asagi" in that pond and I watched her and others that were similar.
i do not see others in the haul that are as decidedly ki asagi, but i do see pale gray asagi with touches of yellow to yellow going freestyle on the gray scales.

I don't think its impossible to make this type if you set out to do it. pale asagi x scaled yellow ogon. would be careful about "the twist of hariwake" because if you introduce hariwake you're going to have metallic fish. i learned late in the game that ogons are metallic. i was shocked. tried to deny it! but what i see with my lemon ogons is that the metallic element is subdued and maybe it just gives luster.

I don't look online for fish anymore, so i cannot be sure, but i doubt there's much available as ki asagi.

totally love her. She's smart. We always have to pull the nets twice to catch her. would love to breed her, Matt, and have some candidates -- but have pretty much used up the water around here. Plus bird is making self known plus bear. If you try this cross, i know it will be interesting to us all.

I don't think its impossible to make this type if you set out to do it. pale asagi x scaled yellow ogon. would be careful about "the twist of hariwake" because if you introduce hariwake you're going to have metallic fish.
I know metallic, and asagi for that matter, is not what you were going for Max. But I wonder if a asagi had some metallic characteristics, would it look alright. I don't recall ever seeing a metallic asagi, and I wonder if there is such a thing. I don't really recall any koi in which the blue actually looked metallic. However, from a flock spawn years ago involving a female shusui with no hi, just blue and white, and several metallic males, I got a blue and white shusui that had metallic white on the head and fins, though the light blue skin did not look metallic to me.

I like the reticulated scales of asagi. Right now, I have two adults, a male (nicer looking of the two) and female. I also have two female yamabuki ogons (metallic). Not my #1 plan, but I've considered crossing the male asagi with the better female yamabuki ogon. But I'm concerned I'll get koi that are all just sort of, kind of, dim metallic. And the whole, never having see a metallic blue koi, thing also concerns me with that idea.
