      Azolla

Anyone know how to get a quarter acre dirt bottomed pond clear of azolla? Birds or animals must have brought some of the plants to the pond this spring as it never had it before, and the whole pond is now covered with it. There must not be enough fish in the pond to eat it all or to have kept it from spreading.

The reason I asked is Azolla did not winter over for me but duck weed does. You could get a. grass carp in there are ducks

Floating rope with a short net, drag over surface. People will buy the stuff, too, btw.

      Thanks, all.
It is azolla. but I did not look carefully. There were ducks here at one time but they are gone. There were also fish that had been stocked in there but I guess the herons got most of them over time.
i think I have enough to furnish all of Koiphen all they could use for all of their koi for all of next year. Anybody want to buy a cubic yard of azolla?
I called a local fish hatchery and they gave me some ideas also.

Azolla died during the winter for me also.

I have small amounts of duckweed in some plant ponds and water containers that has survived for years, but that is not a problem in my larger ponds as the koi eat it all.

Yeah not really having my sympathy Frank as it is not duckweed. I personally like Azolla because it is soo easy to remove compared to duckweed (sinks when disturbed and overwinters).

You could make a citric acid/vinegar spray and burn the little suckers. Honestly though as they don't sink you can agitate the water and push it into nets. With Azolla it is nice that they have the symbiotic cyanobacteria inside them (nitrogen fixation like legumes) but I think it makes it less palatable to fish. I personally m planning a dedicated tray of Azolla to scoop out weekly and add to my compost pile. In my experience Azolla mixed into soil seems to prevent fertilizer burn also.

But seriously if someone brings duckweed onto my property it is "shoot on sight"... I really hate that stuff!

This azolla covers a half acre pond. It is impossible to just "net it out." I think i found a solution that will kill it out In smaller quantities it is great for fish, and to add nutrients to soil or as a mulch. Fish also love it. There is just too much for fish to eat, or to net.

Is the pond too large to add salt to kill the azolla?

I don't know how much salt it would take, but I am afraid it might hurt the fish and the plants around the pond. The pond belongs to my son.
