Name that Fish

This is Flow. I bought this fish 8 years ago and the tank read Shubunkin. However, Flow had a tank mate named Ebb for the past 8 years who I believe was a Shubunkin. Flow does not look like Ebb did. Unfortunately Ebb passed away 2 weeks ago leaving Flow alone. I would like to get another fish but I do not know what Flow actually is. At 8 years old Flow is about 10" long and lives in a 75 gallon aquarium. Is Flow just a very small Koi??

Hi Cindy and welcome to Koiphen. Sorry for your loss of Ebb.

I think Flow is a koi. If you do get a buddy for Flow, I would quarantine the new fish for a least a month before putting the new fish right into your tank. A new fish could carry parasites or disease to Flow.

Good luck in your search for a new friend for Flow.

Thank you for reminding me about the quarantine. I had found a very young koi and brought it home. The meeting did not go well. Flow was attacking the new fish. I put a cookie cooling rack in to separate them. Today I got out the old 20 gallon tank and set it up for new fish using about 60% water from the 75 gallon tank and 40% conditioned water. Now I have 2 aquariums running! That sure was not the plan. I will let new fish, Flip grow a bit and try again. At least I am getting that quarantine in!! And both tanks are clean!!

Keep in mind that if your new fish had any diseases or parasites it has already been introduced into your original tank when Flow and Flip had their meeting. So also watch Flow closely for any signs of disease or parasites.

How much difference is it in their size?

Are your aquariums next to each other so they can see each other? Maybe that would help when they meet again. It may also help if there was something in the tank so the new fish could hide until they get used to each other.
