      Sore Identification?

      Good Morning,
I haven't noticed this sore/ulcer on my butterfly before.
      Pond specs:
Southern California, close to the beach.
      1500 gal
10% water change weekly. Ran through three carbon filters for dechlor. We have chloramines here.
      78 degrees
      7.88 pH
      NH4 0 ppm
      NO3 < 5 ppm
      GH 200-250
      1.5 turnover rate.
Zakki sieve prefilter, bead filter, ceramic waterfall.
      40 watt UV sterilizer
Active bog planter. Water comes from the back of waterfall and flows through a planter of clay beads for plants and drains back into pond. Worried about using salt, will kill plants.
      Plants keep nitrates low.

If this is a sore/ulcer this will be the third this year. lost 2 fish already.
Is it time to do a pond treatment? If so what is a good prophalytic that won't crash my bio-filter? If it is salt, what level will the plants tolerate that would be effective?Name: 20200820_075043.jpg

Fish behavior is normal: still eats well, no sequestering or clamping. Loves to swim in the current created by the waterfall.
No new Koi added for a long time
      Tried to get all angles.

I have oxytetracycline and neomycin available to make a medicated food. Would this be helpful?

Thanks in advance for help =)
      Cheers

Because the fish is a butterfly, the fins are somewhat tender and lead ray is easily broken and that is what it would appear to be. I would treat this with Tricide Neo as a topical, applying some of the dry powder with a Q-tip to the reddened area. This will require catching and sedating with Clove Oil or MS222, then cleaning with hydrogen peroxide or iodine, and then applying the powder. Open the packet of Tricide Neo and dump a small amount out onto a plastic bag, then with a wetted Q-tip, coat the Q-tip and then rub the reddened area. Give it a couple of minutes before placing in clean water to revive and then put back in the pond.

Salt has some uses, but in a planted facility, it has no use. Some plants will tolerate up to 0.2% salt, but the needed salinity for most applications is 0.3 to 0.6% which will kill most plants.

As always, thank you for the reply. Any chance it might heal without intervention?

It may. Depends on the immune system of the particular fish. Keep a close eye on it and if it gets redder, treat.
