      Question Malachite green and Formaldehyde

      Hi all

I'm new to the koi hobby.

Just need to find out about the subject
If this product is used to treat a pond according
      To the calculated pond size.
How long does this chemical stay in the water
      Before it breaks down.
Say for example treating for ich.

FMG mixtures are the main active ingredients in many broad spectrum parasite treatments. Do not purchase the chemicals seperately and try to make your own FMG compound. As I remember MG is a carcinogen.

      Hi MCAsan

      Thank you for the reply.
How long does the FMG last or is effective.
Say for example if I treat the pond today, is it still effective in treating the pond for a good couple of days until it losses it's effects and breakdown. I'm trying to understand when it comes to whitespot and it's life cycle. Since it can't be killed when it's on the koi or when it falls off but only killed when it emerges to find a host. This is what I'm trying to establish , if I treat today and it it's effective for a few days then I can re-treat again to cover the free swimming host seeking bug stage.

The treatment is usually a 3 treatment cycle, once a day and do a 25% water change, then treat again until you hit three times, then I usually gave it a cycle off and then gave a final fourth treatment.. I don't recall if you do the water change after x hours or if you do it before the next treatment. Just buy one of the products and the treatment cycle and dosing will be on the label.

The label indicates that a 25% water change should be done BEFORE each treatment. One old bottle I had said to do a teatment on day 1, and then again on day 4. A new bottle ( different brand ) indicated that treatment could be done on consecutive days, as Danzcool indicated. In all cases, water chg is suggested before each treatment.

I do my FMG treatments at night too. My rational, the bottle says to turn your UV off, so UV must degrade the product.

If that's the case, why do the suppliers suggest 4 days, 7days and even 10 days before dosing again?

Maybe 2nd and 3rd time spans of the treatment would coincide with the life cycle of the selected parasite and it's breeding cycle.

I have never seen a supplier suggest those times but it doesn’t matter, it is still ineffective in hours.

The commercial mixtures of FMG I use say to dose 3 consecutive days. It's worked for me to skip a day
inbetween each dose too, but I've never seen it advised more than that.

I am sure we will get feed back along the line.

I have taken to reading up on the malachite and formalin mixes recently due to no stock by a supplier.

I bought the products separately and made up the suggested ratio.

3.5 grams malachite to 1 liter of 37% formalin mixed, and 20 ml added per 1000 liters pond water at 4 day intervals.

      No fatalities so far.
