      Ochiba

when we got our first pond I called a guy off craigslist to buy some fish he informed me that he had a strange looking fish he had never seen. He told me it was brown and blue so I got the wife together and we went up to take a look at what he had she instantly fell in love with this fish so we bought it. It was a beautiful blue with brown patches as she has aged the brown has taken over the blue but she still a favorite. Once I got home I did a bunch of research I learned about the Ochiba Shigure I have become obsessed with these fish so I am thinking of starting to breed Ochiba Shigure. I thought I would ask you guys about the bloodlines and other things about breeding koi I've had spawns in the past now I feel like getting serious and making a comitment to this breed and trying to expose more people to this wonderful fish. from what I understand they are Chagoi and Soragoi mixed. I was thinking about getting good Japanese brood stock who are the best breeders of Chagoi and Soragoi? Would it be better to mate a female Chagoi to a male Soragoi or a male Chagoi to a female Soragoi?

Don't really know what to say about crosses but what I can say is that not always your first selections of parents will be the ones that produce the best fry for you.

You can use a variety of parents to produce Ochiba. Chagoi can be crossed with Asagi, Soragoi, and Kohaku from what I have read to make them. I would talk to a dealer here in the US and see who is currently breeding the best and what your budget is. They should be able to help if your funds match your wishes. Russ at PSKoi found parent stock for Sundan Koi Farm when it was still up and Dan had produced some great Ochiba.
