      Ochiba - My champion

Yet another strong survivor. Probably my best koi, though male. Its brown color seems to be receding, but it has been like this since I got it 2 years ago. I love his sparkles on his head under the Sun, and his distinct brown scales on both sides.

I happened to hurt his tail when I just got him, now it is recovering. Probably never be perfect again.

      Update:

Those pictures were taken just before I moved him from the in-door over-wintering tank to the out-door pond. He has been in that tank for about 8 months.

After less than 10 days out-doors all the distinct brown scales on his sides have grown together in color to form complete patches. I read that the natural Sun-light can make the color more intensive, and it is hereby confirmed.

Very beautiful. Its got a great body for a male. Im partial to Ochibas. My oldest is a 10yo ochiba that turned into a chagoi over the course of her life

      Update:

Now, after 3 weeks in the outside pond the ochiba has got much thicker brown color. A little bit too much on the sides I think.

Inazuma28: Do you mean that your ochiba got completely brown or grey?

When I just got it for 2 years ago, probably as sansai, there was very little brown color on its sides:

Two more years and I may also get a chocolate chagoi!

Much improvement after being outside. I had no idea the brown would fill in that fast.

Much nicer than the first pictures you posted. It was way too light in those first pics.

It had this thick brown color before I moved it into my over-wintering tank. After 6-7 months indoors it paled very much, even the grey background color paled. Now I just feel lucky that the brown color has not faded away permanently but could come back.

I guess that something is missing in the light I used: 2X 1000 lumen LED-light bulbs from Ikea hanging about 30 cm over the water surface. In the beginning I used 4X then I thought that it might be too much light. Anyway it makes me wonder:

What is the best illumination for koi in-doors so that they color will not pale?
