I attended the Koi Talk zoom meeting with Takayoshi Omosako. It was interesting and I took some screen shots of the presentation. I had sent in a question, but he only answered a couple at the end and mine was not amongst them. In his talk about his Shiro Utsuri lines he mentioned the development of sumi and had some examples of sumi progression (shown in the screenshots) and had some pointers for tosai selection - look for sumi at the base of pecs and on top edge of gill plates, and that all of the tosai he sells have been selected for good sumi so if you have one it should develop nicely. However, the nisai Omosako Shiro that I have had extremely heavy sumi to start with and is now receding. My question was what to expect going forward - will it ebb and flow or just keep disappearing? He did mention that harder water benefits sumi, and my water is very soft.

My koi last year and this year:

Do you think I can post the screen shots from the talk? They did mention that all the info will be made accessible after the zoom meeting.

      BTW it was pronounced “Shir-o-tsuri” with accent on the “o” - something I didn’t know : )

First off I want to start off with I'm no expert. My opinion is based on what I read online and my experience with Showa for the past few months.

My take is sumi can change quite drastically over the first couple of years of a koi's life. Shiro Utsuri are basically Showa without any beni so whatever applies to Showa should also apply to Shiro Utsuri, in that sumi is a gamble, mostly. Knowing the bloodline helps but not every koi has the perfect DNA in areas that we often wish they would excel in.

Aside from it being a gamble and water hardness / softness, water temperature could have an effect on sumi too. I have noticed the sumi on one of my Showa has receded when the week is hot but comes back when it's a little cooler. In my opinion, Shiro Utsuri look better with less sumi and more shiro. The sumi makes it look powerful but with more shiro it brings out the elegance.
