      2020 showa spawning failed

I have showa spawned successfully on April 17th. However it turned out that the parent pairs didnt result in high numbers of showa fries after 1 month growing. Majority is kohaku. I estimated that I have around 100 shows or sanke fries. I am not happy about the growth rate either

Gosankes tend to be somewhat a little slower growers in the early stages that would explain what your seeing, now on the other hand I think you need to post better pictures of your parents since what I can see if these were the parent's you used are a sanke and what it looks goromo to me but I can wait for better pictures.

Thanks for sharing. Even disappointing results are valuable for the learning experience, both for yourself and those you inform. So your post is appreciated.

As Orlando may be getting at, the low number of dark fry may be impacted by one or both of the parents perhaps not truly being showa. The one on top reminds me of the one at the link below which prompted quite a debate as to whether it is a sanke or showa.
      https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showt...Sanke-or-Showa
When I saw the one on the bottom, I thought kujaku, but not metallic. What is that? Then when Orlando suggested goromo, I thought, "perhaps". Whatever their heritage, neither appear to have a typical showa look with thick sumi bands and strong sumi markings on the head. It doesn't mean they can't produce good looking young. They just may not look like showa.

Actually, the female is a showa from Ogata. The picture in my original post is male koi. I don't know why so many kohaku resulted from these three pairing.

That's a showa indeed, so we know each fry has at least 50% showa genes. But in showa spawns, it is normal for most of the fry to not be dark (showa, utsuri type). The majority are almost always light colored either kohaku (usually not good ones), solid orange, or solid white. I recall hearing of professional showa breeders speak of the percentage of dark fry being as high as 50% to as low as 1%. I know a local dealer who was disgusted with his showa spawn one season, because every fry in the spawn turned out to be solid orange. In the 5 showa spawns I've done prior to this year, I think the percentage of dark fry has been as high as 33% to as low as 8%, with 20-25% being typical.

Your 100 is out of about how many fry? I am just wondering about the percentage. If you had 5000 fry, that's an extremely low percentage, but if you had 500, that's 20%, not a bad percentage.

I found 5 decent fish that i could continue to grow. It looks more of sanke than showa. I haven't culled kohaku yet. hopefully some decent kohaku can come out of it. I gave rejected fish to my brother's arowana. I will start a new pair to save this season soon.

After I culled fries 2nd time, I felt that I dont want to keep them anymore. The pair has some good kohaku, but this is not kohaku spawning. This makes me consider what if koi would develop sumi later in life. That's what I dont want. Next year I will try dainichi showa pairs

I can understand stopping the effort early if you don't like what you are seeing. I once did that when I saw that every young koi had a head deformity. (I have used the same parent koi in other spawns in which that did not happen.)

I have not kept many of the light colored fry from my showa spawns. But I have a 5-year-old "kohaku" with a couple of small faint black areas that were not visible in early months. Also, as he got older, he developed red in other odd areas including on the base of his pectoral fins, sort of like red motoguru. I also still have 3 ginrin two-year-olds from a showa spawn that are not showing any black so far. Two are orange muji. One is an orange kohaku with only white on the face.

Update on my 4 koi. Sanke grows 3.5 inches and kohaku grow an inch. I feed smashed koi food combined with daphia and brine shrine. They really grow on those foods.

Sounds like their size is progressing very well. Whenever it is most convenient for you, I'd like to see photos and note the pattern/color progression.

Not bad for a backyard spawn, have you noticed the duck shape on the Sanke's head and shoulders

Nice pattern developments. They've also grown and bulked up very well!

      Hi guys,
my update on my fries. They grow to 4-5 inch, my biggest one is 6 inches. My brother found a sanke in his aquarium tank. It is the first pic. I did threw some of my fries into his aquarium. I was surprised to see it is a good quality fries because his water quality is terrible. Which one of the following should I keep?
