      New pond build in Denver

      All,

I have gained a lot of knowledge from readings forums like this and I am using this build thread to inform others like me who might benefit. I will start by saying I have a lot to learn about koi and I put myself in the novice category at best. I have been an avid aquarist for three decades. I currently own a 2500 gal FOWLR and 600 gal reef. When I moved to Denver three years ago i found a house with a garden koi pond and got hooked. I did a lot of research on koi and finally found a very reputable builder (Russ) to build the pond specifically for koi.

So far I have moved the current koi (12 from the 5000 gal garden pond) to a 1750 gal temporary pool with an OASE 38000 filter. We have ripped out the old pool and dug the new foundation which needs to be absolutely level with vertical walls. The new pool is going to be 40 ft by 14 ft by 4 ft. Work on building the pool will start 6/1.

I am using two of the big RDFs (SeaSide PP 100 RDF) feeding two bakki showers with a ton of media. I will post updates as we make progress. I am very excited. Attachment 601643Attachment 601643Attachment 601643Attachment 601643Name: original pond.jpg

Beautiful setting for a pond. I'm looking forward to watching the progress.

This pond is to serve as a pool as well for my two kids (9&11). So I am over doing the filtration. I plan to only keep between 15 -20 koi in it. Should be small enough bio load to handle the swimming. Hope it works as I have not seen too many people swim with their fish but it was always a dream of mine.

I think it's pretty cool to swim with the koi.

Most of the filtration has arrived and is being stored in the garage. Still waiting for two large stainless steel Bakki showers and flow friend pumps. Name: Filtration storage.jpg

What will you do for heating the water in those cold Denver winters?

I am running gas to a pump house and will keep the pump house at 50 degrees. Cover the pond somehow. Maybe as a online heater. I am thinking if keeping the water at about 45 degrees in the winter. My last pond averaged 40 in the same spot without any heating. This is still left to figure out.

Not to be a debbie downer but you would want to make sure you shower immediately after swimming in a koi pond. A well-known koi dealer just had part of his foot removed from an infection he got when going into a pond.

I have multiple engineering degrees but when it comes to doing actual large projects using my hands, I have little confidence. I will do plumbing, carpentry and electrical on a medium scale. I hired the best people I could find both for the excavation and the pond building. I did have lots of conversations to make sure the excavator was able to meet the pond's builder's requirement for a level excavation. So far I have been impressed by both.
