Thanks Rick. I’ve been using the card for a week so it’s broken in. My PH is 8.3 so good there. I did a windex vapor test on the card and it reads “toxic” just fine. And when I switch between tap and pond water I give the card 20-30 minutes for the reading to change/adjust. It’s just strange that when I test pond water and then add a healthy dose of SAFE to the small jar, it never goes to yellow or the safe reading.

That is not a problem in use, because free ammonia concentrations change gradually, but if you put the card in a jar of water with or without free ammonia, you need to wait at least 24 hours (48 hours is better) to get an accurate reading. Also, the cards do not work if the pH is below 7.0, but that is rarely an issue in koi ponds.

I don't see anything in Rick's post that says there's a "break in" period but only that it takes
      24-48 hours to register correctly.

I've never used the Seachem Card but have chosen to just redose every 48 hours regardlessly.
From what I've read it's very hard to overdose so I don't worry too much about that.

20 to 30 minutes is a lot shorter than 24 to 48 hours. The card is not designed to measure a rapid change in concentration. It is designed for the gradual change that occurs in the pond or aquarium.

The cards that I used were in hanging the tanks for weeks with ammonia added daily to cycle and still never showed a reading. I agree with Steve - just redose every 48 hours. I believe the cards are a flawed technology.
