Thumbs down Koi USA Magazine will no longer be in publication.

      FOR RELEASE 5/3/2020
      Dear KOIUSA Advertiser and Consumer:
As the last Chairman of KOIUSA, Inc. I am incredibly sad to inform our loyal and long-time advertisers that we have been forced to shut down our operations.
One issue shy of 45 full years, we have published our last and final issue (44.5 Mar/Apr 2020). May the hobby long remember how much KOI USA and its advertisers have contributed to supporting the AKCA and all the koi hobbyists throughout the US and Canada!
You were invoiced for issue 44.6 (May/Jun 2020) in full expectations that we would continue publishing. Unfortunately, we can no longer continue to fund our magazine’s operations.
Therefore, we are cancelling all open invoices for issue 44.6 (May/Jun 2020) and reimbursing advertisers who have already paid their invoices in expectations of continued operations.
Reimbursement checks for those advertisers will be forthcoming from the AKCA.
FYI: Since 2008, we have been slowly but gradually losing both advertising and subscription revenue. We have tried cutting back on operating and publishing costs and increasing advertising costs as well as subscription costs. That has barely sufficed to keep our heads above water – until now.
As compared to the May/Jun 2019 issue, three full or part-time advertisers (that advertised in this month’s issue last year) have reduced their ad sizes to reduce costs.
Furthermore, as compared to the May/Jun 2019 issue, eight full or part-time advertisers (that advertised in this issue last year) no longer signed up to advertise in KOIUSA.
Additionally, we have several advertisers who have not paid their outstanding invoices for advertisements in prior issues and/or for 2019/2020 Dealer Listings. No names here.
I am sure that cash flow matters to our advertisers; but it matters to us, too. Enough on that, for now.
I am positive that Covid-19 has helped break the back of not only KOISUA but that of some of our advertisers, too -- and that it has damaged the koi hobby in general.
May we all just hang in there, remain safe and eventually come back stronger than ever.

In closing, the Board of Directors of KOIUSA, Inc. wishes to thank you and your company for all the support you have shown us through the years.

      Don Chandler
      Chair, KOIUSA, Inc.

It’s been a tough last couple of years for the magazine . We’ve been trying to hang in there with an all volunteer staff , but the financial burden from a serious reduction in subscribers and advertisers, plus quite a bit of money owed by a number of past advertisers , has made it impossible to carry on without dragging the AKCA down with it . The AKCA still supports Koi clubs , as well as the financial Grant Project KHV at Oregon State University, and We didn’t want the continued financial loss from the magazine to affect those endeavors .

Sad for the hobby but typical for many hobby printed magazines in today's digital online world. I wonder why no 100% online magazine? Pond Trade online magazine appears to be doing well.

Koi keeping once once super popular. Much like model railroading the circle has shrunk. Local FreeDumb lovers haven't helped matters with all the regulations and serving poison water to households, at insane prices, making it all that much worse. I have a buddy up there whos insurance clowns found out he had oxyacet cutting equipment and welders set up in HIS garage but they told him get rid of it or get dropped. He could have Blammotized them but no ins/no mortgage agreement.
Off to burn some brush and blow a few stumps up. Gotta love dynamite. Does Lowes have that ? LOL

I wondered that too- though I’m not subscribed. Sounds like maybe not.

I did see a video of a guy who started “quality koi farm” mention the magazine this morning. He was talking about how that publication helped him so much starting out when there weren’t a lot of good resources available

Subscribers will receive a letter stating options for compensation , we are currently working out all the details.

      Updated information

      Dear KOIUSA Subscriber,

We’re sad to say you won’t be receiving any more issues of our magazine. We’ve been forced to go out of business due to a steep decline in advertising revenue even though subscriptions have remained fairly stable over the last year or two. You should know we’ve greatly appreciated your support and loyalty.

We’d gradually been losing advertisers. We ended up down 10 advertisers for the May/June issue compared to last year. We lost 3 of them during the last month. Some didn't renew annual insertion orders. Some changed insertion orders mid-stream to reduce ad size & cost. Some shifted from full to seasonal/part-time. Some cancelled insertion orders mid-stream. Some won't answer emails or phone calls. Some won't pay outstanding invoices. Some phone #'s ring out of service. COVID-19 or accelerated shift to digital advertising? Take your choice. Short Answer: Too few advertisers providing too few advertising dollars for far too long and an unknowable future.

Although under no legal obligation to do so, the AKCA has decided to help make it up to our most recent subscribers – the new subscribers who signed up during the last year and have received few, if any, issues for their money. If your first issue was the Jul/Aug 2019 issue or later and you have 1 or more issues owed you, the AKCA will mail you an equal number of back issues from before you subscribed – up to a maximum of 6 back issues per such subscriber.

If this is something you wish to pursue, please send me a letter with your name, address, phone #, email address and subscription date if known. We’ll cross-check our records and if you qualify, we’ll send you back issues once the dust has settled from dissolving KOIUSA Inc.

And thank you again for your support and loyalty. You’re a special part of this hobby’s wonderful family.

      Best wishes,

      Board of Directors
