What about the Beni makes you think it is questionable? Just curious as it might lead to some good discussion.

I think all three are nice finds, especially the Kohaku. Nice depth to that beni.

I think he is referencing the area just to the left of the front of the dorsal, but personally that looks like there is underlying sumi giving a false impression of an area of weak beni.

What stood out to me is the saw tooth formation of beni around all the edges and areas of uneven beni on the shoulders...is that an area of underlying sumi?

The beni on that showa is strong. Nice Chagoi! Hopefully dark spots don't occur on the face.

If I had to guess, these are the areas the sumi is going to emerge from. Some will be thicker some thinner or spotty. The "saw tooth" does not itself indicate anything to me as the beni looks thick in that area.

There is no saw tooth Beni on the Koi. That is Maruzome Kiwa, which is Kiwa that follows the edge of the scale, rather than Kamisori Kiwa which cuts through the scales. Saw tooth Beni is a sign of weakness but you would see a lot of ragged, saw toothed, edges rather than maybe one that I see. Sometimes this occurs when the beni is consolidating as well.

The only thing I see about the Showa Beni that I would consider is that it isn't totally even through out. It isn't as "strong" in some areas as others.

Hi Kevin, I see what you mean I did take some time over the koi and this koi was in a garage pond since early March so this pic here may help the Sumi will be interesting to watch but glad with my choice. But as always with any small Showa koi fingers crossed

That is very good to know Russ. I need to look at more high quality koi to truly distinguish the difference.

Yes, will be interesting to see this one develop. It has a long way to go, can't wait to see the face pattern on this one.

I dont like the eye on the Kohaku but other than that they are nice but that is my taste with the eye. It reminds me of goldfish with one a;; back eye. just my mind does not mean its bad too anyone but me.

Love the beni and pattern on the young kohaku, but that chagoi is really SWEET! . . . beautiful reticulation.

Thanks for your take on it I was the same with the eye but that was minor fault and for the money paid the good far outweigh the bad so no brainer

Can I asked where you purchased the Marudo Kohaku? Looks like that red is stunning! Almost like a crimson.
