      Bakki Shower/sieve help

Hello, I知 trying to make a Bakki shower with a sieve on the top- much like Nguyen痴 recent build but having trouble conceptualizing it. I will have ceramic bacteria house media 3 of 4 containers. I am trying to pump feed into it and have it gravity back into my pond - it値l be 8 feet away. Any tips or advice or links to some screen are much appreciated! Thanks.

      I知 using these containers.

Are You open to better pump fed options to prefilter the water before it feeds the shower ?

Sure. I have considered that as well. I have often thought of allowing my Aqualink 5 tier filter to take much of the muck out of the water beforehand but decided I didn't want to make it the workhorse due to the time it takes to clean it. The sieve option would have been the most easy option imo to clean- hence the reason I stuck it. If you can offer more efficient methods, please don't hesitate.

As it is, the pump would be feeding the bakki shower/sieve after 2 vortex settlement chambers.

That’s great , do You have any prefilters between the pump and settling chamber?

For my pond I have each drain gravity feed to an UltraSieveIII unit. The outputs of both USIII units feed a Flowfriend pump that takes water to the top of the shower. The screens inside the USIII units are made of edgewire (not mesh) with a 200micron gap. Water that falls down the parabolic screen is shaved off and solids slide down to the bottom and out of the water column.

Let me take a photo or video for you to explain. Not sure words would do it right

Between the pump and the settlement chambers is an aqua link Osaka filter box. As you may imagine, my pond ha a lot of proteins in it still and can get quite cloudy as it is. Hence the reason for the sieve and the bakki

The sieve and Bakki shower will not help with DOC’s .
Sieves are best at prefiltering and would not filter fine enough to feed a shower, a sieve with a fine enough screen would be a maintenance nightmare. All the sieves on the market use 200-250 micron wedgwire screen, and a shower should be fed with cleaner water that approaches 50 microns.
A sieve would work best for You by replacing the settling chamber.
I think Your system could be vastly improved if Your willing , and entirely DIY’d , looks like Your a great DIYer .

I am willing! Just need suggestions! Ha

I currently have 100 Micron mesh screen I was planning to use for sieve in top container of the bakki. Bought it last year for this and just hadn't figured out the best way to do it. I know it would be a lot of maintenance, at least in the beginning until I collect a majority of the solids.

What would you do to change my set up?

We had a great discussion . I recommended that He improve the settling chamber to improve it’s efficiency and get better flow , and then pump the water up to some mechanical filtration like S&G filters that will then gravity feed into the new Bakki shower that He is building .

No passive settling chamber will do as good a job as a physical barrier. That is why sieves and RDFs work so well. The only negative about an RDF is cost.

Remember we filter (capture and remove) undissolved organic materials such as poop, uneaten food, clumps of algae. Then the water is sent for nitrification where bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite to nitrate. Nitrification is not filtration. We are not capturing and removing ammonia or nitrite molecules. We are giving bacteria colonies every opportunity to do the biological conversion from ammonia to nitrite to nitrate. So a pond water treatment plant has at least 2 stages....filtration of solids.....then nitrification of ammonia to nitrite to nitrate. Some pond water treatment plants may also do the third stage of denitrification/mineralization where bacteria strip oxygen from nitrate and release nitrogen gas.

Draw us a diagram of what your concept will be. Good luck on your design..

What pump and gph are you using to feed the sieve. I tried using the periha 25k but it was too strong even in the lowest setting so I switched back to periha 16k and used 25k for my monster shower.

This is me cleaning my 74 micron sieve once a day. I will have to clean it 3-4x a day when feeding season kicks in. I'm a stay at home dad these days so it's a welcomed task

That looks like a strainer made of mesh. It does not move the captured solids out of the water column....it holds them in the water column until they are hosed out....every day. With a sieve made with a parabolic screen of edgewire, the water falls through the screen while the solids slide to the bottom and out of the water column. No need for daily cleaning of the sieve. Typically you only rinse out the collected solids once a week when you do a water change.

It's made of nylon so itll eventually stretch to overflow into the catch can. I recently replaced the 74 micron mesh. Cheap DIY for $1.80

But yeah it's not a parabolic wedge wire sieve

Here is my plan, using the above pictured bins (they arrived today, finally) for the sieve/bakki shower.

It would be pump fed from my skimmer (after talking to Catfish whiskers, I think this would be my best approach at this point), a 3100GPH submersible pump - Alpine Cyclone.

Sorry , but I do not see how You came up with any of this from Our conversation, and the ideas that I shared with You.
Pump feeding from the skimmer circuit is Fine , but that sieve (if You want to call it that) above the shower ,if I understand Your drawing correctly, is a poor idea . A microscreen fine enough to filter water clean enough for a shower , would be a maintenance nightmare . You have plenty of room to use a better DIY mechanical filter(s) like a Sand & Gravel filter , or a static K1 filter .
