If at all possible restrict their diet, they have a a habit of eating far to much, which compacts on their internal organs and they end up turning their tail up.

I love them. they are a winner when you have visitors around.

The males are far more manageable, but they do not have the same eye catching appeal as the huge bulky females.

      Garfield.

I have learned from some koi hobbyists here in Sweden that they all had some small koi (most often tosai) that did not survive the first winters. But those that survived and have became bigger can survive in their ponds winter after winter without problem.

My mistake was that I had not done a complete water change before winter 2018/2019: Now I am quite sure that it was the bad water quality, not the long winter of 7 months that killed most of my koi. last fall (2019) I did a complete water change and left some less-than-good koi in the pond, and I have not got a single dead koi. At least not yet as it will take one more month before the water temperature reaches 8 centigrade.

The precious ones have been in my warmed garage, and I will keep doing so in the future - don´t want to take risk!

They are cheap but the quality is not there can't compare them to Marusei chagoi.
