Looking very good Orlando. I don't recall, but I suspect you have bred kohaku and sanke in previous years. Have yours developed to a deep red in the past, or do they just get red-orange? Is the deep red tricky to get, or do deep red oyagoi just tend to produce deep red young (once they mature).

I once did a kohaku/sanke spawn long ago, before the efforts of recent years, most of the resulting kohaku and sanke were orange at a year old, even though the oyagoi were all a deep red. But there was one tancho sanke though whose head spot was pretty red.

Yes, I've bred this same group last year and the red comes along nice and slow but It's consistent. Last March at the koi show had a ton of compliments about my beni here's a sibling from the previous spawn.Name: 20200403_174536-1.jpg

Excellent color! Do you think there are environmental factors that allow this development? Or do you think it is more just a matter of using oyagoi with that color? Or both?

Genetics and water quality I think are the two most important factors. I don't use color food because I want to see how the beni develops, just thought i should put that out there.

Very nice! Good size for this age and chunky builds also.

      All very nice!

How do you deal with the fish you're not keeping? I've been breeding koi for several years and typically sell off excess fish in the spring, but as I become more successful, I cannot carry that many fish to spring. Curious if you have a similar problem and if so, how are you dealing with it? Thanks

You probably said somewhere in this thread, but these are sanke right? I ask because young goshiki can look a little like this, and I know you sometimes breed those.

Good morning Matt, yes these are Sanke and you are correct I've been working with Goshiki now for about 10 yrs but It's taking me that long to produce a Goshiki with the trait's that I like. What's interesting is the mother of these Sanke's is the same female that I used in my last Goshiki spawn in 2019 here's one of the pieces that cross produced.Name: 20200810_103407-1.jpg

Goshiki seem like they would be one of the more difficult ones to breed, since there underlying background color changes so much in the first couple of years.

The one time I crossed a kuro goshiki with a soragoi, some of the little ones looked like kohaku or sanke for nearly a year. Then most of the white turned very dark grey in winter, fading to light grey in summer and back to dark the next winter. Another challenge seems to be waiting to see if the red or orange remains like a solid plate on top of the grey, or if the orange gets clouded by the grey.

At this point I've learned one thing about sumi it's a beast to tame and with the beni my likings are floating beni I've been lucky in that regard was able to produce that type of beni from the very beginning as far as a weak beni in Goshiki it would be the orange beni.

I assume these are your Tategoi of the bunch. Lots of potential.

Really like the hi pattern of the sanke on the right. So I understand you are keeping the 3 sanke in the last photo. But are you keeping the ones in the first two photos, or were those re-homed?

Good morning Matt, the ones in the first photo is a mix before I separated the ones am keeping in the second photo those are leaving I just temporarily separated them so I wouldn't have to stress out the entire pack. I ended keeping 19 koi of what I call project fish to keep moving forward.
