Wow, very nice!! Looks like your hard work is already showing results.

I took this morning and went thru the kohaku fry, they were in a smaller tank so I was able to complete the process in 4hrs not bad considering the prep time to have different tanks ready with proper air and shade for smaller amounts of water that heat up faster so that has to be addressed before you start going thru the fry to maintain good water temperatures thru the process. My only goal today was to catch the tobies so the one's in the middle of the pack have a better chance of development. I took a couple of pictures of the fry and they were in black tubs but is due to the space restrictions I have in the area that I was working this morning. There were more tobies than I thought, this fry aren't a month old yet and the middle of the pack are anywhere from .5" to just under .75" the tobies on the other hand were anywhere from .75" to 1.25 a considerable size difference from the better ones, in the past I have noticed that your better ones come from the middle of the pack.

I guess they need to get up around 1.5" before you start seeing patterns begin to form right?

I have not seriously bred kohaku, but have had a few come from showa spawns.

On one of the tobies I could see what appeared to be some beni starting to develop but usually around 1.5 to 2.0" is when the pattern starts to show up.

Here are a few pictures I took tonight and I apologize for clarity but we have surface movement and low light conditions so by the time I shoot the image and the flash goes of things change but it gives you folks an idea where these little fellas are headed. You will notice a greater amount of green string algae but that's going to change soon as I increase mechanical filtration tomorrow, you will also notice the kohaku are catching up

When you culled the kohaku, what characteristics were you using to keep or reject the small fry? Outside of those that appeared in a Sanke spawn, I've never successfully raised kohaku.

My first step with the kohaku was to separate the tobies to give the middle of the pack a better chance.

Got it. I had thought that you were trying to reduce numbers too and did some culling. I guess you cull the kohaku once you see some type a patterns emerge, right?

Correct, with kohaku you can start seeing color and a faded pattern around day 90. With the Shiros you can cull after a week but I wait till around 30 days so they can get a little harder.

Well today was one of those days, you go thru the week planning Saturdays agenda with the koi and a pretty serious find makes me change plans but that's ok all address the mechanical filtration on the fry tomorrow lord willing. Just came back in after taking a few pictures of the fry they are at buffet its very interesting watching them feed on microplankton, can't tell much about the kohaku yet but I the Shiros are showing a lot of potential their skin shines in a very particular way they are looking very nice, enjoy

If things weren't busy enough at the moment am looking at our next full moon schedule and it's looking like this weekend will be it now one of my kohaku females #5 to be exact looks like she's ready and I think my male Sanke would like to meet with her again. Three spawns in one season

Well it's one of those days, house chores come first so I fed the koi this morning and came back in and told myself don't go thru that sliding glass door till you finish inside, lol well that's just the way it went I got to go out back at 4:50 to feed the koi and did a water change. Not sure how some of you are going to interpret this but I was planning another spawn this weekend but something got my attention and am not superstitious but I do understand that nature has a way of doing things. Read that the full moon this weekend will have a full eclipse and I said to myself do you really want to test or compete with mother nature so I decided to move the spawn to the fall, I know that's more that I usually write but some points are of interest. Was looking at the young ones and decided to take some pictures, please pay attention at the size of the fry and look for the glow on the skin on the the Shiros the kohaku are very close to start showing patterns, enjoy

I've had them spawn at all sorts of moon phases, even around new moons. I think once they are ready enough, they don't care that much about the moon. So if you wanted to wait a few days, it would probably be fine. But it's not like you don't have a lot keeping you busy with the spawns you already have going. And considering the long growing season that you have, there's no problem spacing them out across the calendar.
