Well, there's a nice and bright full moon with clear skies water temperatures are around 65 to 68* and as promised here they go and am very surprised on how receptive the female (kohaku) is she's the one initiating things, when I placed her in the tank she was investigating the spawning media right away now is waiting game. Down the road there's going to be a small experiment but first the spawn needs to take place

Were doing well to this point, they completed the spawning process and now I run water thru the system to clear the water and it's a waiting game 72 to 96 hrs and we should see fry. Sean you taught me a lesson this will be my only attempt this yearName: 20250315_132238.jpg

I certainly didn't want to start a trend... This forum needs more than one 2025 spawn - can we get some volunteers? Matt, what are your plans?

Sean it's all going to work out, now on this side of the equation we should be expecting to see some fry Tuesday night but I believe the big push will be wensday night let's cross our fingers

Spent most of the day yesterday preparing the tank where the fry will be transferred to had to catch the ones that were in that pool to transfer them to the larger system but something I didn't expect were these lower temperatures we were already in the mid to high 70s*and now mid 60s during the day to mid 50s during the night am hoping it warms quickly.

Here are some off the results from last April's spawn, you will see 3 that just out left all the others behind and the mid pack followed by the smaller one's In this cross am learning how the sumi develops to me at this point the sumi development is the most important part regardless of the growth, hope you learn something...Name: 20250317_160119.jpg

Barring something unforeseen, I will likely try one spawn this year, probably at least a couple of months away. Perhaps kohaku, maybe a different combination than last year.

Approximately what are the sizes and ages of the kohaku and ochiba oyagoi? They seem somewhat large if that's a 500 gallon tank.

The female kohaku was born here in 2020 and she's around 22" the Ginrin Ochiba arrived here last year and he was about 14" that would put him at 3yrs old now size wise he's about the same size of the female if not an inch larger.

Orlando, I know predicting into the future of a first-time spawn is next to impossible, but what are your expectations on what might emerge from this pairing? Further, what would be your “dream” outcome?

Thanks. He's been growing fast. From that photo of them together in post #601, he does look a little longer.

Yeah, I was wondering if this type of crossing would yield kohaku and ochiba, with ginrin and non-ginrin versions of each. And also chagoi, soragoi, benigoi, shiro muji. I wonder if there will be some with red patterns on grey reticulated background, sort of goshiki looking.

Sean with the little information I have gathered thru out the year's if I was to take a guess; we will see kohaku, soragoi, benigoi, shiro muji, a small number of chagoi and I mean small probably not more than 5 and maybe some kanoko kohaku, hopefully some half decent Ochiba. Now to your dream outcome question; Ginrin Ochiba and Ginrin kohaku because I could split this one cross into three different directions

Matt your on the right track but I don't think we will see anything goshiki like, there were if I remember correctly 4 or 5 different crosses to produce Goshiki and Ochiba was not one of them.

As you can see there's plenty of food waiting for the fry.

Good evening folks I know what they say no pictures it didn't happen well this is going to be one of those updates, these last two days during the nights have been unusually colder and it has slowed down the timing of the hatch last night I saw a few but tomorrow morning it's projected to be 46* and those temperatures are not to my liking these fry are going to be tested right from the get go. The numbers I saw this evening look very positive now I cross my fingers and pray for the best outcome. I couldn't let it go I had to try and it worked but remember folks these fry hatched in the last 24hrs they are hard to find use the plastic netting like a grid to help you find them, hint left of the beetleName: 20250320_211147.jpg

Trying to see them on day one can just about give somebody a headache. But If I get close and gently move the spawning material, I can easily see them wiggling around.
