I have a few 500-watt aquarium heaters that I drop into the tanks when temps start to get low during the first few days post hatching. I believe that this helps, but in your case it may just run up your utility bill.

I concur with you on the utility bill 100%, now am going to add another picture that I believe is either going to be an ochiba or a soragoi and the reason I say that is there's two types of fry dark like this one and light or white fry those would be your kohaku, benigoi or shiro muji. Am doing 2 things in this picture this amount of water is 50% their spawn water tank and 50% water from the tank they are going to be transferred to so I want to see how the fry will do in the new water and also provide the image![]()

Here's another image with a small sample of fry and the darker ones have definitely been in my opinion the winners if this had been a contest, I've moved about 500 fry today and ain't put a dent on that spawn![]()

Got home from work and went outside to clean the large filter and while that was going on took the opportunity to transfer a few more fry![]()
Am learning a few things here Ochiba blood line is a dominant gene the numbers of dark fry vrs the light color ones.

The lighter ones can be a little harder to see in a light colored bowl. I wonder what percentage you would get if you netted a couple dozen and counted, and do that maybe twice and take an average.
It may be interesting to see how the different varieties grow. I know from my showa spawns and other's showa spawns, the light colored fry tend to outgrow the darker fry early on. But it may not work that way with your fry given the very different family history.
As for adult sized, kohaku tend to grow a little bigger than some varieties, ochiba perhaps even more so.
Good morning, Matt I think this is the best I can do 3 different pictures but I believe the results are satisfactory.
The dark one's numbers are substantially higher. Here's the kiker I don't recall ever seeing a kohaku at this stage with black eyes, these results are going to be interesting.

Thanks for those clearer photos. I am counting about 55% dark. But since there are a few in the in between shades and some of the very light ones look like ghostly blobs, different folks' count may vary.
You might take a look at my kohaku fry from last year at 2 days old (post #12) and a little past two weeks of cool weather (post #27). Their eyes seem black (or brown) to me.

Good morning folks what a temptation spawning tank and spawning media have been cleaned and sanitized I'm feeling a Goshiki spawn in April
In the meantime the Ginrin Ochiba and Kohaku spawn are growing getting ready for an experiment but they have to get a little harder before shipping![]()

I had previously posted on this thread not to long ago that I had 2 items to share with you all the first one I already gave a hint on my previous post and the second one was just posted on the main forum and it's titled "after a year I can share the results".

In the meantime this is what I battle every year just have to over feed so the tadpoles don't start eating each other and pursuing the fry till I get to the point where they are hard enough to go thru their first cull and that is to remove the tadpoles after that the fry are large enough to feast on tadpoles once they are big enough.![]()

Is using a finer mesh screen not an option? I would think a 1/4" mesh would keep out frogs/toads and still allow feeding without needing to remove the mesh.
What size fry would handle these fish foods?
Would any of these foods be suitable for the fry?
Egg yoke ground in the pestle mortar.
Fish food pellets put through the coffee grinder.
Brine shrimp.
Daphne.
Infusoria.
I used to feed my "tategoi" with rock and surf fresh bait sardines.
A length of nylon line with hook through the top of hard mouth, dangling in their grow on tank.
With in hours it could be reduced to a skeleton of the complete sardine.
Tategoi will eat just about anything the period am referring for the green water are the first 10 to 15 days after hatching.

3 days ago I posted the picture with all the tadpoles well I declared war that same evening get home from work and all sit by the fry pool and with a fine mesh net I start catching I entice them with the koi food I've been catching a few every evening place them in a 5gal bucket and take them to a large pond I have nearby and release them. I had a chance at a few pictures of the fry and they are going in the right direction as you can see![]()

That's a lot of tadpoles. Glad the fry have more room.
Wow, looks like you've got your own little Exodus chapter 8 going on there!![]()
