Well here I go, I mentioned that wanted to check ammonia readings on one tank vrs the other. The spawning tank will be addressed as tank 1 and the tank where the spawning media was moved to will be addressed as tank 2. I took an ammonia reading yesterday from tank 2 and the reading was 0 I didn't documented because to me it was the expected result, my apologies for not documenting that data. However today a full 48 hours after the spawn here's the sample from tank 1. this is the first time that after 48hrs ammonia hasn't gone thru the roof now here's my prosses during the first 72hrs I will run fresh tap water for about 2hrs thru each tank during the mornings and I wait till the afternoon to get a sample of water to test for ammonia, let's see what happens by day 3 no water changes tomorrow morning I have to return to work so we will see, at this point am not seeing clusters of bad eggs am sure that's influencing the lack of an ammonia spike. At these temperatures am expecting hatching to begin sometime during wensday. I guess I should open a new thread to discuss (Jimbei Sumi) I think you all know where am going with this.

I have to ask.... Did The Eclipse have any effect on your spawning experiments? Frisky ?

The pair I had in the tank went Saturday night two days ahead of the eclipse so the evidence is inconclusive. But an update is due; both tanks 1 and 2 are reading 0 on ammonia today, Tuesday 3 days after the spawn with the amount of fungus in both tanks I can't understand the 0 on ammonia. Today the readings were taken before the water changes, tomorrow who ever survives will be addressed with prime so I expect that by Friday night we will get an idea of the results from this spawn.

4 day's later am seeing a trace of ammonia on tank #1 left on the picture and 0 on tank #2 right on the picture, tank #2 is the one that I just transferred all of the the spawning material. I don't expect to see much of anything today because when the fry first hatch they go to the bottom for a couple of hours in my experience before they come up to regulate their bladder. All treat both tanks with prime this evening as a precaution and bring some lights out tomorrow and check for fry.

All share how I deal with overflows, tanks even thou it wasn't needed in my opinion I still added some prime to add some insurancetank#1
tank #2
Tomorrow this area is forecasted to receive 2 to 3" of rain, so is best to prepare.

Got home from work today and my exitment would not let me go out to get an idea so I waited till it was time to feed and then I took a peek. We have fry coming up on both tanks, we should get a better read tomorrow evening with lights and all post pictures then right now my camera on my phone doesn't have a good enough zoom to capture the fry but we're heading in the right direction

I did set up the light on tank #1 and look at the amount of eggs that don't get fertilized when using 1 male it's just the way it goes.

It's Friday, Happy Friday everyone. Took some pictures and first the ammonia test on both tanks left is tank 1 and right is tank 2. The trace of ammonia from tank 1 is gone now they are both at 0 these sponge filters are amazing I also believe that moving the spawning media to a different tank also helped immensely usually by this time the ammonia is way over 5ppm and am addressing it with prime for some days till the filters catch up, nevertheless I think the information observed here is priceless hope it can help someone. The next 2 pictures are from the tanks, #1 is the darker tank at this point the fry are a little harder to see in #1, #2 is the light blue tank.

Hope everyone had a good weekend, tank #1 was the first for a water change and it was a slow one took 2hrs to add 75gals of fresh water but it was a success also took a couple of pictures for an update Hope you all have a great week, by the way ammonia is 0 in both tanks these
sponge filters are awesome

They must like the environment. They're growin'.

They're lookin' good Orlando. There seem to be a lot more sanke than kohaku in those samplings. Are those random samplings or did you select sanke for the photos?
I also see that the sanke don't develop like showa do. The showa I've bred are dark gray to black for the first several weeks until suddenly the color arrives. But these have started looking like sanke very quickly.
Good morning, yes I mainly selected the one's with sumi so one can see what they look like at this stage. From past experience these will change especially the sumi, the white one's will be the one's that bring the surprise but now that I know what to look for all be able to point them out early

Hope everyone had a good week, this morning was doing some cleanup maintenance on the fry tank's and before I started messing with things I took a couple of pictures and one of them was a winner when one doesn't know how to identify deformities on smaller koi. Here's 3 examples; head deformities; bent tail and flared gills hope this image helps someone

Nice teaching post Orlando on what to look for and which to cull.

Good morning and Happy Memorial day weekend. We'll it's begun the first cull for tank #1 there's probably 300 tadpoles for every koi all have some interesting images by this afternoon at this time am looking to separate the Toby and eliminate as many deformities as I can see and remove my non-achievers.
Koiphen 2023 Koi Person of the Year!
I think I need about another hour or two with tank #1 but that's going to have to wait till tomorrow. All start with the entire tank before removing any fry.
Second here are the ones that got culled today
Third these are the ones that need another hour or two
And last, this is the reason I couldn't put this off anymore
About half of the ones I have to go thru tomorrow will become tobies in a week if I don't separate this batch tomorrow, if you look closely at the very white ones those are the cracker Jack box surprises, almost forgot these fry are just under 6 weeks old and they been growing in a 350 gallon tub.
