I think that is correct. I've never gotten the impression that my females only contributed size and conformation. And I don't recall hearing of Japanese breeders using females with poor pattern and color just because they had good bodies.

And given the percentage of ginrin young that I have seen relative to the percentage or ginrin oyagoi that I have used, I tend to agree with the theory that whatever gene causes ginrin must be dominant. However, there is some question in my mind on that because you have reported few ginrin in a non-ginrin/ginrin cross. Also I think Sean did the same last year with his yababuki/platinum cross.

Yes, I did. This is the thread that Matt is referencing. The male was standard scales and the female was Ginrin. I got roughly 15-20 percent Ginrin out of the crossing. This number is only counting the nice small Ginrin scales.

Gotta be a somewhat boring diet... fish for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, at least he's got a nice selection to choose from

I've fed my share of Asprey, but never a hawk. Is that a Cooper's Hawk?

Yes to your question, he or she sits on the fence waiting for black razers we have an ample supply of them in this area.

Our red-tailed, Cooper's, and sparrow hawks never mess with our koi, nor do the barred or great horned owls, but we keep the little koi covered due to the great blue herons.

I apologize if I gave the impression that the hawk was going after the koi it's just that I found it so interesting that he spends so much time around all these tanks but he's just hunting for snakes

Interesting trio, you can see the black line from the dorsal to the head on one of them the other is broken but still there and the other just shows Goshiki pattern at this young stageName: 20220108_170241-1.jpg

They are looking really nice! Can you describe what characteristics define a koi as being a Shunrai?

Really mad at myself for culling my Shunrai. I didn't know the value of having one other than it was an oddity :/

They have qualities similar to a Goshiki but the beni seems to have a copper hew when young and that sorta relaxes as the koi matures they also can vary somewhat on the gray netting some can be lighter than others here's a picture of one that was born here in 2018. Also want to clarify that the last picture on my previous post is a Goshiki not a Shunrai.Name: 20210516_190249.jpg

Don't worry Hope I have quite a few of them I can get one headed your way I also discovered that now I have two pairs that produce Shunrai the parents of this batch are not the ones I used back in 2018 and this was unexpected I had no idea that these results would come about I was just trying to produce a couple of male's ginrin Goshiki that I could add to my Goshiki down the road.

Thanks for explaining. I am reminded of a couple of koi that I used to have and re-homed ~10 years ago. I recall they had that gray netting and a bit of a shine, but the color was closer to yellow than orange. I recall thinking of them as ki kujaku that did not have good shine. Now I am wondering if they were shunrai. My memory of them is a bit foggy. I may see if I can find any photos on my old computer.
