I did not know that losing pattern was a tendancy. There have only been three ochiba that I have kept for multiple years, and they did not lose their patterns. One's pattern changed some, but it stayed ochiba. In your experience, at about what age range are they more likely to lose the pattern?

I think a ginrin soragoi or ginrin chagoi can still look pretty nice. And I have also noticed ochiba, soragoi, and chagoi, tend to be more tame / friendly.

really dont know at what age. Just my experience. Would guess about 5 or so. Depends. Some of mine went quickly others slower. Others no change.

It's an interesting thought but here it goes, with what I've learned about different koi varieties 3 is the max am willing to go it really takes a long time for one to truly understand how a particular koi blood line will develop and learnig on how to find find the better one's that's the trick and one won't really know how a particular pair of oyagoi will perform but no worries hopefully my idea for next spawning season will come with a little experience help all announce around next April what's going to take place lord willing

Merry Christmas everyone. Went out today to feed and they felt like coming up to feed, now I have to say this the growth on most of these have surpaced my expectations there's 4 or 5 that are what I call my non-achievers and that happens on every spawn and I know and expect that to happen but next spring when I catch and measure these I know will over what I thought they were going to achieve and that's when all share one of my 2 pieces of information I said earlier in the year I would share with you, enjoyName: 20241225_114109.jpg

Thanks for the update. They're lookin' good! I'm pretty sure these are from the kohaku x sanke oyagoi in posts 512 & 515. [Please correct me if I'm mistaken.]

Sean at this point I wouldn't be surprised if one or two would hit the 10" mark

Matt, yes they are and I never imagined that the largest tosai I have ever breed would have come from my smallest parent oyagoi up to this point another interesting fact that koi teach me.

I would say that could happen if you use small oyagoi that are small just because they are very young but with the genes to grow big. However, I recall you mentioning that over the years you have trended toward using oyagoi that are a little bit older. So I gather these area not the youngest oyagoi you have used in your spawns.

The male when it arrived to my impression was in his second year back in 2016 that would put him at 10yrs old and the female was born here in 2020 placing her as a 4yr and her growth wasn't that great I would put her at around 22" to 24" at this moment but skin, conformation and her beni are very good so that goes with what you said if the genes are there to grow witch I think is going to be the case with some of these. Next spring is going to be interesting when I measure these fellars.

Good morning Sean, there's a few with stray beni that I held back to see changes but none took place and there's one aka, meaning all red/orange on the back with white underside.

Orlando, I guess it's just one of the many things that make this challenging.

I asked because in both my 2022 Sanke & Kohaku, and the 2022 Sanke & (Sanke + Showa) crosses I saw a decent number of Kohaku.

Sean the best way I've found is by keeping a log of what type of varieties are produced with my pairings and I can compare with subsequent spawns and have found it to be quite helpful
