What do u think about pre filter for bd
i am far from an expert here but i have a similar pre filter (SC) based on the Kent Wallace design found here:

Ive had mine in service for two summers and it works good for my 2500 gallon pond.

Will you be using any filter media around output? Like Kent, I use a landscaping basket with a bunch of 3/8" holes. Originally i filled it with dollar store plastic pot scrubbers but later replaced them with my own version of Bacitwist. The Twist doesnt clog like the scrubbers so I've stuck with that.
One thing that i didnt anticipate was the draw down. Mine is a good 2-3 inches so I had to adjust the center output pipe. Rather than sucking from the top, i drilled a bunch of 3/8" holes in the vertical pipe that sits inside the basket. Pond level also affects this balance. Also, the top of my barrel sits about two inches above pond level but still overflows when i shut off my pump...also unanticipated but i deal with it.
I didnt see a drain in the barrel. How do you plan to clean it? I have a 2" drain but find it easier and quicker to drop in a sump pump when i do my major cleaning every 1-2 weeks (I tap the 2" drain every couple days to water flowers) 😉

Steve, Do you have a picture of the media that you use? I just built one for my SC. I have to install it,but not sure on the media type? I really don't want to use a pad or foam material if I don't have to. Thanks Ken
I used the bacti twist as well, get the large size because if you don't it will clog up quickly. Mine will go a week in the summer before it starts to suck air because it plugs up. I use a 275 gallon tote with a 16 gallon container for the pre filter and 4 cubic feet of the bacti twist..
Go for the filtreau c-30!!.. I think someone here has a soon to be build thread with a filtreau rdf.
. This was my prefilter before installation. 1200 gallons. Feeds into a Sac Koi15. 14 years and it still works like a champ!
Sorry, just saw your post but you probably already have the answer from the other posts. I was inspired by Bacitwist to make my own version. I have a loads of 2" ABS plastic rod in stock from other projects so I turned it into miles of twisted shavings on my metal lathe. Stuff works great as filter media.
