      Questions about fluke treatment

      Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and somewhat new to koi keeping. I recently built a new pond and also purchased two new koi, a Shusui about three weeks and a Chagoi about two weeks ago. I made the mistake of not quarantining either of these new koi. Less than a week after releasing the chagoi into my pond I noticed my fish acting strangely. I tested the water, as this is a new pond I was expecting that I may have been experiencing a spike in ammonia. After testing the ammonia was only at .25 ppm but my fish were all at the bottom and some where clamping there fins. I did a 20% water change and this seemed to fix the problem. The next morning I looked out at my koi and notice all of them were flashing. I also noticed while feeding the chagoi was spitting out any food that she ate and my goshiki has grey patches of mucus on his body, I began to think I had flukes. The next day I treated the pond with prazi, immediately upon treating the pond the chagoi started flashing like crazy for the next hour or so. I also purchased a microscope and tonight I pulled out the goshiki and scraped him and sure enough he had flukes. My question is since I treated my pond with prazi 48 hrs before I scraped the goshiki shouldn’t all the flukes be dead by now? Or does it take longer for the prazi to kill the flukes? Is there a better treatment than Prazi for flukes?

I would suggest getting an ammonia binder like seachem prime or seachem safe. What are your pH. KH and nitrite numbers?

If fish are heavily infested with flukes, they can behave in an erratic manner after meds are administered. Regarding what medication is better, I much prefer flubendazole (commercially available as Fluke-M). In the meantime, make sure that you are putting enough prazi in and not erring on the side of caution with less. You can dose much heavier without any ill effects on the fish. Also, if you’re doing water changes, you will need to add back enough medication to make up for the change.

Hi, thanks for the info. My ph is 8, nitrite is 0, Kh is at about 5 drops, the water temp is hovering around 58-60F. I have been using safe for ammonia and I have not done any water changes since right before I administered the praziquantel also per the prazi instructions I also turned of the UV for exactly 24hrs although it is now back on. The good news is my chagoi is no longer spitting her food out as of this morning. Also I have attached the picture of the flukes that I scrapped. Can you tell if these are skin or gill flukes?Name: Adjustments.jpg

Looks like a fluke to me.

      https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showt...nd-Information

The treatment normally will kill most flukes but it won't kill any eggs. The incubation period for the eggs are normally
about a week but depends on water temp... but I'd do another treatment in 7-10 days. I'd second Andrea's suggestion
      of Fluke-M.

How long does it take to kill the flukes? The flukes in the picture are from 48 hrs after the prazi was added and they still were wiggling around. I think I gave the correct dosage my pond is about 3,000 gallons. if anything I probably dosed slightly higher than the instructions recommended. I used the brand aqua-prazi.

Just another advocate for using FlukeM.

It's been an ongoing discussion about how Prazi simply is not that effective on flukes any longer. I've spoken with people in Europe that were tripling the dose to try and get rid of flukes. For this reason, I can't say how long it might take to get rid of the flukes using Prazi based fluke treatments.

My suggestion is to track down some FlukeM and use that. You will save money in the long run. FlukeM knocks them out quickly and also works on internal parasites as an added benefit.
