I have no evidence that you can't go from a bath to a ProformC tank. The main thing to consider is to maintain the water temps. You don't want the water temps more than 4 degrees different.

yeah that makes sense. that's controllable, so I can do that.

      Good, and another well done.
Having the medications there and being able to be proactive made all the difference. I know you're still not done but it looks so much better than it did.

Gave the creature another Oxo bath this morning for an hour. 5 gallons of water / .5g of Oxolinic acid, couple of airstones in the tub. Emptied the QT and refilled with clean water. Temperature was about 3 degrees cooler, was best I could do. I'm going to wait an hour or so before I go back for another ProForm-C treatment.

I did notice while the fish was in the tub that it pooped and the poop was no longer white, but rather light brown. My understanding is that is a good sign. Here's a picture from this morning. I didn't sedate and turn it over this morning, but you can sort of see the conformation and the improvements I *think* I see.

Three degrees is fine, not a problem.
You're right, it sounds like the waste is more in line with what I would consider healthy.

How long does ProForm-C last? The water is clear, and I have some nitrites I’d like to reduce through a large water change.

You can shorten each treatment to 10-12 hours
      I’ve done it

That wasn’t what I was after. I know I can shorten the treatment. I want to know when I can do a massive water change with nullifying the effect of the third water treatment.

Waiting 10-12 hours should be fine.

Perfect. I hit 10 hours and did a huge change, like 80%+. I have to go out of town for business so this was the best compromise. The fish is now in elbagin and i'll raise the salt level to ~ .5% by the time I leave in the morning. Hopefully the large water change and time is enough for the formalin to not interact negatively with the salt. That's what it will be until Thursday evening when I get back.

The fish is definitely in better shape. It's whiter and less stressed. It's more active. It will eat if I feed it. The swelling is down some, but seems to have stabilized and isn't continuing to decrease.

I think I'm going to need injectible antibiotics. I haven't found a vet here who will do that, so we'll see what happens.

i'm back from my trip - the fish is still alive and generally doing better. There's still some swelling I think, but I guess I'm not entirely sure as I don't know what the conformation was prior to it being sick.

do we think this is the beginning of popeye? It's awfully symmetrical ...

(please note it's tinted yellow because the fish is in Elbagin in QT).

Hi Jonathon, hope the trip went well.

One eye does look a bit more pronounced. Did you do the medicated food? I've found it more successful than simply doing baths. Medicated food is a good option.

I didn’t because I didn’t want to put extra burden on my dear wife. I will start tomorrow!

      I understand.
My thought is this, if this koi had been in my care I likely would have started injections asap. Since you don't have them, medicated baths and medicated food are your next best bet.

Of I had them I’d use them. I can’t find a local vet who will prescribe.

I got injectible antibiotics. Baytril, from a vet. She was very nice and gave me 5 doses in 3cc syringes. I administered the first tonight. Went in at an angle beneath a scale. Hopefully I did it correctly.

The syringes have .4ml of 100mg/g concentration. The fish is right about 20" long. I hope this is close enough to the right dose.

      Where did you inject?
I prefer by the vent fins, just past the ball of the joint. There really aren't any scales there.
Sedate, flip over, I use shorter needles (1/2", I think), inject. I often swab some iodine on the area before injecting, or after if I forget before doing it.

The dose sounds about right. Scroll down to section 19.

I used this video as my guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEC2NGQMCY4

I injected on the side of the fish about 1.5-2" behind the pec fin. There are definitely scales there, so I was careful to push the needle under one at an angle. There was a tiny bit of blood that stopped immediately when I pulled the needle out.

Reasonable process, or should I tweak? My vet suggested another dose tomorrow. She actually came to the house to see the fish because she was curious and super cool.

BTW: the link you posted, yeah I've read that link like 38 times in the past few weeks

I think the dose the fish got is a tad bit too much, it's closer to the dose needed for a 22" fish. But I suspect that's not going to be an issue.
