      Another consideration is scale pattern. Here is a research paper that tells the odds of getting each of the different scale types in fry for a given pairing of adult scale types:

      I have trouble telling which ones have the scattered (bad) scale patterns until they get up to about 1.5".

      Interesting makes me want to read up more on the deformities and factors affecting it temp, water quality food souce.

      I'd like to see now that my fish are growing slower and the water temp is pretty stable, if the number of gill plate deformities lessen. As that was the bulk of the deformities I had last year.

      A few years ago I did an inbred pair and those deformities were numerous.
