I suck in picking tosai so you might want to reverse everything I say.

      Skin: Good
Beni: Doesn't look hard but the pattern makes me a little nervous.
      P-Fins: Leaning female.
Body: Good head size and shape. Good head/body proportion. Not sure about body height.

I see a spectacular fish, well balanced heavy but nice pattern, good Odome and tail tube

A very good inazuma pattern. Beni seems reasonably thick. Maybe a male but definitely worth taking a shot at. Good luck!

Speaking further on the beni and pattern specifically, I would've been a bit cautious as the sashi does not appear to be even throughout the areas of the inazuma pattern. In some areas, it appears to be one scale in width and in other places I see no sashi. Should this fish possibly be female and make it to the mud pond, I'm sure the tail tube would thicken and make this an impressive fish with nice balance between the inazuma pattern as it lifts and the shiroji.

Taniguchi is a relatively young breeder. I have noticed that his fish change drastically from year to year. I have seen at least 5 different styles of Taniguchi kohaku. I think it is a clue that he is still experimenting with new oyagoi. Big and established breeders like SFF, Dainichi, Momotaro or kohaku specialist like Matsue and Murata all have kohaku with their unmistakable signature looks and quality.

Here is a Taniguchi male that I finally re-homed last year. It looked totally different from this one. Of course it could also be the grade of fish since it was 1/2 the price with no azukari option. The skin was always good but the beni was messy, hard and failing. Still money down the drain at any price range.

Day 1 photo of my Taniguchi koahku. See what I meant by different look. The body, skin, beni are all different. Another take-away is, sashi does not "clean up" no matter how long you wait. BTW, none of the fish in the photo are swimming in my pond.

Remember how you teased me about my Momotaro Kohaku failing? I won't do that to you.

      How are your Momotaro doing?

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

Tease? You must have gotten me mixed up with RAIN.

My only good Momotaro tosai year turned out to be the 1st year buying from Rob and maybe the tiny showa I bought from him last year at Gardena. Everything else in between went bust for one reason or another. A dealer can have good eyes but when the breeder point him/her to the wrong pond to pick from, the skill will make no difference.

Auction is actually a more sure way to get quality fish. Most breeders don't want to lose face by putting subpart fish in the auction.

Interesting take on auctions. I started off there and had the opposite result as yours. Glad it's working out for you.

It wasn't Rainster. We were discussing my really nice Kindai Showa and one pic I shared had the Kohaku in the bowl. You said the Kohaku didn't fare as well as the Showa. You were right.

Oops, I just realized you're talking the big name, direct breeder auctions and not the domestic take your chance ones. I'd say they have gotten better, some breeders were good all along but I've seen some breeder auction koi you couldn't pay me to take.

Is Purdin still around ? He had nice stuff ( like Brady) and Brett had good Dainichi stuff. Matt Mcann had some good Toshio stuff ??
Hunt some REAL Torazo if anyone carries it these years (RIP Ray). Maybe Bodycott has some ? I've been incognito a looong time..
A fair Nissai is 5-7 years. A good Tosai is a dream.Get a 2-3 year old of 12-16 inch or so that looks good and be patient.

      My ear was ringing...

I'd say don't be blinded by the pattern.
If I had to guess, I think it'll break on the shoulder and shrink everywhere else.
I'd also guess female. Conformation is ok.

I think you started out with a kohaku is not very clean
But it is nice to see progression which helps out a lot

I have been scanning through their last grow out results and I think their beni seems clean up very well
      In my opinion at least
Guess we all learn from our mistake and the only way is to take that risky or gamble step
I found 2 examples from their recent grow out Which got me excite into this breeder is the beni
Body wise I’m not sure yet
