It is always a treat when the first lotus leaf appears in the mud pond. Our length of visible light is approaching 12 hrs and our average temp is 75...though we are enjoying a string of 80+ degree days..... and one of the two lotus cultivars I planted last year is floating its first coin leaf. One was a cultivar known for its edible seed and the other its tasty rhizomes. The pond is 165' long and I planted the two cultivars at opposite ends, the point being I know from location the first up is the edible seed lotus. Not that all lotus seed isn't edible, but these were selected for a fuller flavor and prolific seed production.

We are holding in the 80's until the first of next week when the high's will only make the mid-60's, so I am enjoying the early season blooms while I can. The interruption should be brief as the cold snap is forecast to last only 3 days. The last picture is of one of my favorites....a native, aquatic orchid commonly know as Water Spider Orchis ( Habenaria reopens )

Here is a vine blooming profusely today, one common name is christmas vine, as that is about the time of year the bloom begins. The botanical name is Turbina corymbosa and according to the USDA it is native as for north as the West Indies and south Florida. Whatever you call it....it is a sight for sore eyes this time of year and the honeybees love it! Apparently it produces copious amounts of nectar that bees turn into a delicious honey. Maybe next year I will know more as I am in the process of learning to be a beekeeper, with an eye to getting a few hives this coming spring. My neighbor is an apiarist and I am hoping he places some of his hives on my land for the impending Saw Palmetto bloom....my favorite honey!
