Is UV-light necessary when there is no algae, e.g. in-door tanks?

      Hello friends!

In my in-door over-wintering tank the water is not green (no Sun light), but a bit cloudy.

The fish have been fine, but I am afraid of too much bacterial growth in the water that might cause disease to the fish.

      So I wonder:

Do I need to worry? Shall I turn on the UV-light?

      Thanks for your thoughts!

I believe the cloudiness is either low numbers of algae, consequently not green, or high numbers of bacteria. Either will be helped with the UV, and once the system is completely cycled, the UV can be removed. There is no absolute necessity for the use of the UV, just a convenience.

      Hello Richard:

Thank you a lot for your reply! Good as usual.

I actually donīt mind the cloudiness. I just wonder whether the bacterial bloom is harmful for my koi. I guess that it is not?

      Kind regards!

In medical microbiology it is said that there are three scenarios that will cause disease:

      A. Interruptions in host innate defences

      B. A change in the host normal microbiota

      C. Overwhelming slug load of pathogens
