Are: 1) keep dry 2) 6 months fish-free good to prevent parasite infections?

      Hello friends:

I would like to have some advice again!

      1) Will drying out kill all the deadly koi parasites? I use the same spoon to take water samples for all my tanks, but I have been sure to let it be thoroughly dry (overnight) before I use it for the tank with my better koi. Is it enough?

      2) I have some water plants (mostly water lettuce, hornwort-like plants) that I want to use in my koi pond next summer. I have been keeping them fish-free for 2 months now, and they will be in fish-free tanks for 4 more months. The temperature is 18 centigrade or 65 F. Will all possible koi parasites then have starved to death?

I have not had any parasite issues, yet, but I would really hate it if it would happen.

      Thank you for your thoughts!

For question 1, I think you are safe but if you are super concerned, you could rinse the spoon in a chlorox solution before drying. The little residue that would remain would not affect fish or filters. For question 2, Yes. Parasites require a host and without fish there is no host. But, there are parasites on all fish all the time, the numbers are insignificant, and will remain a non-issue unless the fish are stressed by poor water, major temperature changes, or water parameters that are less than ideal, at which time the parasites will multiply to numbers that cause issues with the fish.
