      uv placement

I am building a new externale filter for my koi pond. The pump will push 4600 gallons at 0 head. I have a 90 watt 3 inch uv sterilizer that i am going to put between the pump and the filter. My question is should the uv be placed between the pump and the filter or should it be placed as the water exits the filter. If it is on exit it will be gravity fed thru the uv.

Where is the water being pulled from the pond going to the pump? What type of filter?

The pump is in the pond pushing water to the filter. The filter consist of 2 layers of matting one medium and one coarse and sone bioballs on top of these. The matts will be held about 18 inches off the bottom of the filter. The filter is a 30 gallon blue barrel about 3 feet tall.

I've only put a UV on the output of a gravity returning filter once, but given the arrangement of your
system, I'd try and do that. You want the cleanest water possible going through the UV and a submersible
pump straight to the UV wouldn't be the best choice imo.

An important consideration putting it after the filter is placing it and using valves to keep the UV housing
with the light flooded. Here's a thread I started when I was trying to figure out where and how to
situate mine that might help you too:
