I've read that 1k to 2k gph per cubic ft of media works well.

Personally I'm not convinced you can have too little or too much, as long as your
shower can return the water effectively back to the pond. I've never seen a post
saying they're flowing too much water through their shower and it's not working.

Here's a old thread that might be of interest:

And just as a technicality... a "Bakki" shower uses Bakki media, so anything else
is a just shower filter. I don't mean to somehow lessen it, but Bakki is a specific type of
media. So I believe a "shower filter" is the correct term for one with other generic
media that isn't Bakki. Just fwiw...

Thank you! The shower has performed well- no issues withwater quality, uv hasn'tbeen on in six years, maintenance free.... so I'm happy with it. In the pic above it was a remodle where I now have all my water returning over the shower.

I used extra liner scraps and closed in the shower to reduce noise, as well as better visually. The plants take over, but will kinda die off in winter, and then come back again.

Not the best pic, but here's how it looks...

It has officially started. I decided to go with the commander heavy duty 17 gallon lowes totes. Much stronger than the 27 commander tote.

I was going to do 3 stacks of totes but I think two stack of 3 tiers good enough. I'll have to go back to home depo or lowes to get some wood to build support for the totes.

Humm. 2 stacks of 3 totes, 4 stacks of 2 totes or 4 stacks of 3 totes?

Japanese matt on top tote or totes, and bottom most tote will be feather rock

Total cost so far 12 17 gallons heavy duty totes $120
      1- 12 ' 4x4 -$12.
      1- 8 ' 4x4 - $8

Total cost so far $140. Might be over budget guys.. still need 4 totes worth of feather rock and 8 totes worth of Japanese matt.. ??

Go big or go home right? I might have to plug in my jebao 9500gph pump to feed this monster mid water pickup shower filter

Experimenting. That's a total of 28 cubic feet of space for bio from the shower filter. I'm trying to see if Incan push my 5 konishi karashigoi to grow faster than my tosai chagoi.

Lookin' good! I love watching your ideas develop. You may just end up with the best filtered small pond on the planet before you're done.

1 tote drilled, 11 more to go. Hope these holes ate big enough not to clogg but small enough to distribution water evenly to the whole tote

Those holes look pretty small... maybe they're bigger than they look. I found that if you get
good distribution on the top, the falling water need nothing to fall evenly further down. Just as a
comparison, these are ~3/8" in my shower containers.

I think smaller holes further apart might diminish the even use of all the media.

All the pipping are in. The holes are re drilled all holes with 1/4"

Power drill was out of juice so its recharging then it's time to drill the bottoms
