Breed something unique!
Breed something unique!
The real Batman wears polyester! Don't be fooled by the plastic imposter.
I think it's just a regular Kujaku right? They all kind of have those weird faces.
Yeah, it would definitely be a wait and see game for sure, but still a pretty fish even if only for a little while. I'm going to have to grow all my brood stock out, I need to keep records and pictures of what their colors do with age. I don't want to breed purple Koi that are only purple for a little while, I need to get a few good years out of them if I can
Here's the video clip.

I thought I'd seen it before but I guess this is the one I remember and it's a little different:

Hope, you already have more posts than me! The KOI bunch has a training program. You should check that box.
To make purple koi you need blue to overlay with red. Asagi and shusui are as blue as koi get. Their powder blue is actually a layer of black (melanophores) overlaid with a layer of mirrors (iridophores) that produce at best a powder blue. Midorigoi, green koi, are shusui with an additional overlay of yellow (Xanthophores). Redder pigment could be brought in to replace the yellow and make purple. Since the color of the red/orange/yellow cell type is at least in part the result of diet midorigoi fed strong red color enhancers might tend toward purple. One Japanese attempt at purple is called Murasakigoi.
Seriously tho, that's exactly the knowledge I need. On a side note, in my totally uneducated randomly picked low quality Tosai, I have managed to snag a few that will be fun to play with and experiment with as well:
Top pic, the ugly yellow one in the middle "Nemo"
Ikarashi Asagi
Shusui "Beast"
Two leatherskin Shusui "Eeyore" with the partial zip
Ikarashi GR Soragoi? Russ said it's not a Soragoi so I don't know what it is
And yeah, #1 priority for springs Koi purchase is some deep red (potential of course) leatherskin to go under the blue Asagi scales.
Not a good specimen, but this male shusui has a darker red and darker blue than most. Still not what I would think of as purple though. I kept him for many years before re-homing him a couple of years ago.
I like him I think it would be wise to find a good Shusui with super deep Beni, to have on hand for any back crosses that may be necessary down the road. From what I understand they tend to be more orange on the Beni spectrum so I don't know if I will have luck finding one. It's so far down the road that I have of time to look tho.
How's Disco doing?
You can occasionally find a shusui with deep red, so don't give up searching. I've found one on Kodama's auction a couple of times, so you might check there.
Doing fine last I saw them, but I have not uncovered them in a couple of weeks. Disco and 30+ siblings are spending the winter in 1800 gallons under a double layer of plastic sheeting for warmth. Next warm day, I may have to take a look at them.
